  1. I got my hands on a AVI file that I have been trying to convert into a mpeg so i can burn it into a VCD. I have tried every encoding program I could get my hands (Xwing, LSX, TMPGen, AVI2MPG and VCDcutter) None of them either recongize the AVI format or cannot modify the file because of the audio stream bitrate. I know its some type of video file becuase I watched it. So I have some questions.

    1. What program can I use to valid or verify what type file is?
    2. If it is a AVI file what are the bitrates/framerate (Audio/Video) that are complaint with most converting programs?
    3. If there is such a thing as complaint bitrates/framerates what program can I use to modify those rate?
    4. Last but not least what is the perferred encodeding program I should use to convert to a MPEG-1 and or VCD?

Hello...I was having the same problem until today. This information was posted by alfa1234, further down in the forum. Apparently VirtualDub fixes corrupt avi files.
Open the avi in VirtualDub....I used version 1.3c, but I'm not sure if it matters. Under video, make sure 'full processing mode' is checked. Also under video, click on 'compression'. Make sure to highlight 'Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2'. Now click on audio and make sure 'full processing mode' is checked of for that too. Now, go to 'file' and save it as 'old format avi'. The avi will be pretty large when it's finished, but it opens up in TmpgENC so u can make it into an mpg. Hope this helps!
