  1. In late September 2005 I picked up a LiteOn 5005 from Walmart... I applied the hacked firmware to allow me to record shows from my cable provider that my Toshiba DR-2 would not record as I got a copy protection message (on my Toshiba)...

My Liteon has been working flawlessly until a few weeks ago... Now it will write to a DVD+Rw or DVD-Rw but when I attempt to rip it to my computer for editing via Decypter I get all kinds of read errors... If I scan the media via Nero or DVD Decryper, it shows many errors on the media... If I fully erase or format the media and write back to it via a pc burner and then scan, the media appears fine...

Thinking there maybe a problem with the media, I bought some new +Rw (Fuji, Sony and generic) and I'm having the same problems... Some of these +/-Rw will not even read in my LiteOn now... On occassion when I attempted to read these discs in my LiteOn they were 'prepared' (erased) by the recorder... yet they were just recorded to a few minutes before...

I don't seem to have this issue with +R media as they appear to rip & play fine... I have not tried -R media yet....

    Any thoughts...???

    Cheers

  2. When I got home from work, I tried a Fuji DVD+R but it failed the preparation ....I then tried a TY DVD-R and it also failed... I phoned Walmart to complain about their 90 day return policy and made a good argument.... and was informed they would gladly exchange it for another LiteOn 5005...

The replacement unit is not recording some movies from TV... I have not applied the hacked firmware BUT I'm not getting the copy protection notice I got with my previous Liteon (cured with the hacked firmware) or my Toshiba DR2...

  3. I'm glad you were able to exchange it. I bought mine about a year ago, and I had a bunch of problems (like green-tinted picture and jittering) which were fixed by firmware updates. Every once in a while, it will not format the media correctly, or mysteriously delete something that was recorded...but for the most part, it works fine.

  4. With my new Liteon 5005 there is a new updated (June 17, 2005) recommended media list. The old 5005 list was dated Oct 14, 2004...

New list has 47 recommended +R discs compared to 19... Now supports 16x

    -R 36 compared to 10... now supports 16x

    +RW 14 old list had 19

-RW 6 on new list, 7 on old.... Victor -RW no longer on the list

  6. I find it odd (but I'm not complaining) that I don't have the the macrovision problem I had with my older LiteOn 5005....

How can I find out what LG burner this new recorder is using....???

    Cheers

kenmo, I'm looking for a DVD burner that will ignore the copy protect signals from my cable provider. It seems as though this LiteOn 5005 with the firmware will do the trick. Now, who sells these LiteOns and how do you install the hack firmware?

Do a search on this (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=102) site, they have TONS of information about the 5005 and firmware hacking. Note that the latest official firmware can't be hacked, you need the one before the latest.

As many Lite-on LW5005 owners have, I had experienced problems using DVDShrink, DVD-Decryptor and Nero to copy DVD's recorded on the 5005

When I updated to the latest firmware, these problems abated. The latest firmware does not support the MV hack, so users must face a trade-off.

If copying on a PC is important, then consider the latest firmware. If copying commercial tapes is important, older hacked firmware.

Beware, I and others have had poor success in getting old firmware to load.

If you don't wish to choose between capabilities consider a video stabilizer and the latest firmware (hacked for additional recording times and region-free).

I am archiving lots of old video tapes I made on first and second generation VCR's. They show their age and the videostabilizer helps me read them in acceptable quality, so even without MV it is useful and a reasonable investment.

By the way I use the cheapest media I can find on the Lite-ON. 2.4x, 4x, anything at about a dime a piece on specials. I have burned hundreds of cheap disks with about a 2% failure rate. And even those only showed incompatibility in some players and I was able to copy on my PC without loss of data.

Amazing what recording at 1x will do.

  10. Update : Getting 'protected content' on few channels...with the old Liteon it was on all of them....

I guess I need one of those Sima units...

  11. kenmo,
I had similar problems with one of my 5005s. After 3 months, it stopped recording on +RWs. Soon it would not record on +Rs. It tried to reformat +RWs (recorded before problems started).

LiteOn Tech Support asked me to return the unit for repairs.
They thought it might be a problem with the laser.

My unit used 098 FW. Not hacked. Tried several recommended +RWs media (Sony Ricohjpn, Verbatim, etc) but none worked once problems started.

I own 5001 and 5005 models. My 5001 units have been running for over 2 years without any problems. After hundreds of burns.

Too bad SkyKnight is no longer available to discuss 5005 issues with.

On a similar note, my friend's 5005 has been giving him problems when finalizing discs. Sometimes these failed discs can be finalized with a computer burner and software. Sonic RecordNow DX that I had from several burners back erases the +RWs I use in my 5001 as well as finalizes some of those stubborn discs from the 5005. I tried ISOBuster 1.9 and it will read the damaged discs so I can get back content from the discs that the machine trashes but it's a bit of a drawn out process. Maybe just better to get a recorder that doesn't do stuff like this in the first place...
