I have done some searches in this forum and Google ... but I have not found any fast easy way to transfer the Tivo recordings to my laptop. My dad has a bunch of programs he wants me to transfer from his Tivo to DVD's. I'm trying to find out how to do it without having to run the recordings through my camcorder to FCP.
His Tivo has a USB port .... if I hook it up to the laptop will it show up as a hard drive?
Any advice ....
Thanks !!!

Get a PC.
Really. That's the only way. That USB port is for you to plug in wireless.
With a PC and a subscription to TiVo-to-Go, you can get the MPEG-2 files off the TiVo and burn them to DVD.
Or strip them of their DRM and do whatever you want with them.
(This is why I was hoping Apple would buy TiVo) -
I might be able to borrow a PC laptop ..... how would I get it to DVD. I guess from the DVD I can put it onto my MAC.
Thanks 820am -
Head on over to tivo.com and go to the Tivo-to-go section. You get a free trial on the Sonic DVD burner....
If you decide to go ahead and do it--and want to rip the DRM--let me know. I did it a couple weeks ago (major pain in the butt) and I'll help. -
Hmm. You can do it on a mac, albeit a very around the way process.
Getting the files is cake via a wireless network... it actually shows up in rendezvous via safari and you get a nice little tivo web interface you can download from. You can also get to it via just a standard web address
https://<tivo ip>/nowplaying/index.html
using user: tivo
pass: <MAK>
Now here is the tricky part... actually being able to play and/or burn these files. VPC is the answer. You can get good old mpeg's (actually kinda of wierd ones) but your mac can now play them (and burn them if you convert them with some other mac tools). If you want know the tools needed in the VPC and Mac end of things, just PM me. It actually is a pretty quick process when you get it down, becuase the conversion via VPC only takes a few mins.
