  1. Hi, I'm very new at this, as some of you may already know. Here's the story so far:

I have downloaded many a divx movie. I downloaded SVCD2DVD and DIVX2DVD and have successfully converted my .avi movie into an MPEG DVD file. The output file contains the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders like it should, the former having all the necessary files with those wierd extensions.

When I use SVCD2DVD to actually write the CD, I open my Video_TS file and try to burn it onto my 'Maxell 8x 4.7GB DVD-R' DVDs. I get an error message saying, "Please insert writable media". But it IS a writeable media! Does it not say DVD-R on the disc itself?!

My questions are many, but I'll summarize. One: Do I have to 'encode' the DVD before I can write something to it? Its obviously not working now. Two: Do I have to go through all those steps I've read about...like authoring the chapters, or dictating all the petty details in burning the DVD, when I just want to test this out to see if it'll work? All I wanna do is get video on my DVD disc from my computer! I feel there are some integral steps and concepts I'm not getting.

I want to say thanks in advance guys...without you I'd be wallowing in self-pity by now (moreso). If you absolutely HAVE to, refer me to another newbie guide (I've read a lot of them). On the other hand, some empathy would be very appreciated, or even better, some thought-out analysis of exactly what it is I'm doing wrong, or not doing at all!

No on count 1 and No on count 2. If you have already converted your MPEG and have AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders write to disk. What writing (burning) software do you have. File is under 4.38 GB? Your writeable media issue may be related to firmware upgrade. But first what kind of DVD writer do you have? Multi-format and speed?

It is writable media but only if you have a DVD writer. You say "When I used SVCD2DVD to actually write the CD", does this mean you have a CD writer? You can't simply put a DVD blank in a CD writer and expect it to be able to write to it because it can't, CDs and DVDs are two completely different things. Your household audio CD player can't play DVDs can it?
