  1. Hi
Well I wanted to convert an avi file to VCD.
I don't understand what's happening because I choose the final output to be 700MB or less and the final mpeg file it's everytime with 1GB...Why is that happening?
    Please help.
    Thanks

  2. Did you account for audio?

Size/Bitrate calculation only accurate if encoding 2-pass vbr.

  4. Hi.
    Thanks for the reply..
Well, yes I take audio in consideration...but even if I didin't, it doesn't matter, because when adjusting the size of the final output in TMPGEnc I put for example in 95% and it says that the video will be with 670MB for example and it will adjust immediately the average bitrate right??

    What is wrong?

  5. 95 percent? You must be using Constant Quality mode. That doesn't mean make the file 95 percent the size of the original. It means use a quality value of 95. The file will come out to whatever size it needs to be to get that picture quality.

To get a file of a fixed size you need to use the 2 pass variable bitrate mode. Set the average bitrate to whatever is necessary to get that size. You'll probably also want to adjust the maximium bitrate -- but I won't get into that because...

Since you are making VCD you are stuck with 1150 kbps Contant Bitrate (VCD doesn't support variable bitrate). With that you'll get about an your of video on a CD.

  6. Hi thanks for the reply

You said that making VCD mpegs I can't use 2-pass? Why not? I can with TMPGENc. I load the unlock and in the settings I can adjust whatever I want and I can make the average bitrate to whatever value I want...I think it's not that problem...

My understanding is that VCD is a standard that is fixed at a certain number of minutes per megabyte. I do not believe that lowering the MPEG-1 bitrate to squeeze more time onto a single CD-R will work and still allow compliance with VCD standards? What matters is how many minutes your original AVI is.

    Cheers

  8. Adcvideo is correct, the VCD standard calls for a constant video bitrate of 1150 kbps. That's why you have to unlock TMPGEnc to change to a variable bitrate. If you use a variable bitrate any particular VCD player may or may not be able to play the result. SVCD supports variable bitrates.

If you still want to use a variable bitrate use a bitrate calculator to determine the average bitrate you want to use. Set the max bitrate to something higher. Say, 50 percent higher as a starting point. Then use the 2 pass VBR option in TMPGEnc.
