I have been using Sony DVD Architect 2.0b and the less expensive, and less complex program from Ulead. I have burned DVD-R and +R with different types of media. I own two desktop DVD player/recorders model LitOn LVW-5005. Both players refuse to allow me to use the remote control to select titles and chapters on DVDs that I have authored with DVD Architect. I have burned the same content using the Ulead authoring program and these units work just fine. I also own another tabletop DVD player (Sony DVP-NS501P). This unit works just fine with both Architect and Ulead.
What is different between the two authoring products? Is there a sort of universal DVD authoring software that is compatible with all players on the market? I was well aware that some players liked –R and some did better with +R, but I didn’t know that I also had to worry about authoring software? Does anyone know of a web site that deals with this issue? I like DVD Architect because I have been using Sony Vegas Video. With DVD Architect I can import the chapter markers that I used with Vegas Video. Are there other authoring programs that allow this direct importing of chapter markers or starting time code?

Some newer authoring tools have dvd compatibilitity problems and bugs, like DVD Architect, Adobe Encore DVD, DVD-lab pro.
Sonic Scenarist or DVD Maestro are "universal" dvd authoring tools....but they are not free exactly...
