Apologies... this is a question that's been asked a zillion times:
How do I make a DVD from an avi file?
I've searched... but can't find a definitive ALL IN ONE answer on these forums. (It's probably there someone... and I haven't been looking in the right places.)
Can someone tell me:
1.
Where to start!
Is there a list of programs needed somewhere with instructions?
2.
There are a few all in one programs... links to these would be appreciated.
3.
Why would the approach in 1 above be better than 2 above?
I assume this is the case?
4.
What's wrong with Nero Express?
(Apart from the fact that it frgging hanged my system 3 times in a row.)
I've used it before and it seems 'OK'.
Thanks.

If you want an all-in-one program you might try Nero Vision Express or WinAVI Video Converter. -
or "the film machine"

When I first came here I found 'Sefys guides' a great help
Try here for the home page of the guide
https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=intro.html
and here for you to put your avi onto DVD are the links to sefys guides
In this first on he uses Tmpgenc to convert and encode the AVI to a DVD compliant MPEG2, he uses vcd as the example but for you to make a DVD just select the DVD template instead of VCD
https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=encoding5.html
In the next guide he uses IFO Edit to author the VOB files, I think IFO Edit has the facility to make an ISO image of the VOB file and then you can burn that with DVD Decrypter
https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=authoring5.html
DVD Decrypter guide here:
https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=burning11.html
It is a simple guide and wont give you a menu BUT it will give you a working DVD, once you have become familiar with Tmpgenc and other utilitys involved in the Encoding/Authoring/Burning process then you can worry about the details like menus or as I call them 'extra pains in the arse that if they can go wrong will go wrong', ahem
Hope this helps -
If you use Tmpgenc/IfoEdite/DVD Decrypter they are all FREE
(Well Tmpgenc runs out after 30 days trial but then you can use HC or Quenc as alternatives)
If Nero is getting on your tits then use something else, if I have learnt anything it would be that there are not really any right or wrong answers, just dig about and use something thats suits your needs
Oh and if you are just starting at this then prepare to verge on throwing the PC out of the window at times lol -
I'm going to be an ASS here but if by AVI you mean a DIVX, then it's not worth it unless you have an extremely good quality AVI or it is so rare that it just has to be done. If it is a movie, get the original DVD and back it up with any of the free utilities available. If you mean an AVI that you created with your camera, them you encode to MPG 2 / author to DVD and Burn to disk.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!
