I'm using a company provided copy of CCE SP. It's a slightly older version, 2.67.xx. I've looked through the posts and found similar, but it seems there was always something else going on. Everything looks normal (to me) here.

I'm encoding a captured VHS tape. I capture the tape in HuffYUV, process it in Virtualdub to correct for any problems and add logos and titles, etc. I then use CCE to encode to a DVD compliant file.

At the end of the first pass, the encoder fails with an error. It only tells me it failed, not what failed. If I hit "Ok," it goes on. There doesn't seem to be any pattern, as it's done this on two different captures. One was animation, one was live-shot video.

Here's a .png of the error message:

Any ideas? TMPGEnc has no problem with the clip, but CCE's output is better, so I'd rather use it.

    My system:

    P4 3.2GHz on an Asus P4P800SE
    2GB Dual Channel PC3200
    Nvidia 6600
    Generic Philips 71xx Framegrabber
400GB HDD space (1 200GB dedicated to video)
    Burners, scanner, etc.

Just for kicks, I tried this same process on an old Athlon 700. It took all day, but gave the same error.

    Did you read the manual??

Looks like you're doing a VBR (multipass) encode, but didn't provide a first pass CBR, or .VAF file to piggyback for the 2nd plus passes...

Just a guess, since it seems like it was about to finish the first pass..

    Good luck!!

The manual (user guide) I have describes in detail all the different features. About errors, it only states that errors may occur. Yes, I read it, but it was of no help whatsoever.

I made sure to check the "Use existing file" button - I ran into this on an earlier encode where it would stop because it didn't have the .vaf file available. I don't remember the error that it gave, but I do remember it was a real error with a message attached.

The live video encode's error is the one in the picture. I was able to go to the frame where it stopped, remove the portion surrounding it, and re-encode. It worked fine. I also batched a number of files using those same settings, with no problem. So, it's something related to the video itself. Without an error message, I have no idea what.

The encoder fails on the second pass, not the first like I stated in my original message. The encoder creates a .vaf file and a useable mpg file, minus whatever frames it stopped at.
