  1. Hey guys, I need a bit of direction please. I have a huge boxing collection on video and...you guessed it, they're all in EP mode therefore, the recodings aren't all that great on playback. I'd love put these fights on DVD, and would like some recommendations on what pieces of equipment I should go with to clean up the playback. The main issues are the standard EP problems, image is a bit grainy, color/contrast/saturation is off. I've seen the JVC SVHS machines mentioned a lot here, as well as color correctors. Would these serve my purpose? (I'm using S-video directly in to a stand alone DVD recorder).
I'd also like some input on stand alone DVD recorders. I'm currently using a Philips DVDR-75 and the options are a bit limited, and I seem to get a pixelized (??) image even in two hour mode when I record from satelittle (the image is clear until the fighters starts moving around).
Money really isn't an issue, I'd just like advice from someone who knows so I don't go wasting $600 or more and get no results. Thank you for any help you can lend.

First myth to dispell. The JVC SVHS VCRs do not do color corrections. They offer Time Based Correction (TBC) which helps to stabilize your tapes that may have some jitter & jumpiness. They also offer the ability to play your tapes much better than a run of the mill VCR, which is important when trying to capture video.

To get the most possible based on a budget (meaning you cant afford that excellent $10,000 piece of equpment) I would say you may need some additional equipment. I strongly believe a person should have a very good playing VCR, an image enhancer and a video proccessor amplifier (proc amp). Depending on your VCR, a stand alone time based corrector (TBC) may be needed, depending on the shape of your tapes.

Read the DVD Recorder forum and see which one "sounds" like the best bet. Pioneer wouldnt be a bad choice. I would recommend a JVC, but I'm afraid it will quit working on you after a few months and you will then hunt me down, stalk me, then bump off . Another thing on the DVD recorder. Your Phillips may have pixelation, because the TV channel it is recording also has this pixelation. I have Dish Network and I get this ALL THE TIME on ESPN and other sporting events. It may be the channel and the fact that the compression they braodcast with is too strong and movement will generate "halo" & pixelation effect around images. So maybe you should keep your DVD recorder, unless you really cant stand it anymore and you are feeling that one of you must go. You vs The DVD Recorder!!!

Take a look at this thread: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239205

    Hope that helps.

  3. Thanks for the reply. Good to know I don't have to shell out over $300 for a VHS on top of the other pieces I need.

I think I may have fixed the pixelated images...I found the recording options, there's a "sports" setting and since I changed it, the playback has been pretty good as long as I stay at one or two hour mode.

    Thanks again.
