Hello,
Dvdshrink - the best.
And a side note - there are commercial dvd5 discs out there. Many of the first genration releases were single layer. As well as more recent "light" releases of comedies and older films without many extras (so as to fit on a single layer). So you can do a 1:1 on some single layer commercial dvds - like the first releases of the Star Trek movies...
But back on topic - definetely DVDSHRINK. Friendliest menu system and topnotch performance.
KevinDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

Hands down DVDRebuilder and CCE.
I like DVDshrink too, but it is now 2nd place on my list.NEC ND3500A/G
Unproper and proud of it -
Rebuilder. If you have issues try the full installer version and several of the encoders. I like Procoder 2.

From what I've used, I'd say:
DVD Rebuilder with CCE first, Nero Recode second, DVD Shrink third.
But that's just in ability to create the best image quality. You'll have to define what entails being the 'best'. DVD Shrink has the best, most versatile interface of the three, with Recode close behind, while DVD-RB has VERY little user control in its standard install (you can get other utilities to tinker with the settings, but it's not user friendly).
Best by cost? Shrink is free, Recode can be had for about $5 (Nero OEM Suite), DVD-RB is free with some encoders, not CCE though.
Speed? Recode is much faster than even Shrink, and DVD-RB isn't for the impatient.
Most reliable results? Probably Shrink, although Recode isn't far behind. DVD-RB is still buggy for alot of users, but I've had no problems yet.
They all do a good job, but a decent re-encoding will always beat transcoding in image quality, so DVD-RB wins in the picture quality. -
Now, if the project is not too ambitious then this one could possibly do the job:
DVNR1000-422
SDTV Image Processing Workstation
Mechanical
Height Rack mount 7 RU – 310 mm (12.2”)
Depth 480 mm (18.9”)
Width 435 mm (17.1”)
Weight 1) 28 kg (61.7 lbs) typical
Cooling Rear mounted fans

I used to use dvdshrink alot but noticed on dvd with 2+ hours quality wasnt up to par. Tried DVD-Rebuilder with CCE and I haven't looked back since!
DVDShrink:
Pros: Friendly user interface, straight forward, time efficient, very few bugs
Cons: No muti-pass mode
DVD-Rebuilder:
Pros: Muti-pass capable, works with multiple encoders, superior quality
Cons: the bugs, time consuming,
I highly recommend checking out DVD-Rebuilder to anyone using dvdshrink or reading this, thank me later. -

I've backed up probably 75 of my DVD's with Shrink and all of them look good, even on a 17" Iiyama Vision Master Pro 410 monitor @ 1024x768 100Hz refresh.
Admittedly I'm not a "videophile" and don't watch movies "critically" looking for little flaws. For me, the purpose of watching movies is entertainment, not evaluating compression quality and looking for artifacts. Been down that road with audio, and I'll tell ya -- eventually it just gets boring. I lost interest in music for a long time, because I couldn't stop "listening to my gear" instead of the music. -
: price no issue...
Get dual layer media?

I used DVDShrink and just started using Deep Analysis + AEC (Smooth) on a show at under 60% compression and I was very impressed by the quality. Of course, it took forever, but I was using a P3-750
