I am in the market for a HDTV converter, and was wondering if anyone here has used this device (ADS HDUP-1500 HDTV Converter)?

I have a 52" Samsung HL-P5085W HDTV and want to change the resolutions from my other video devices up to HD standards such as 720-1080.

What is your goal for using this?

It may solve some obscure connection issue, but image quality will suffer vs. using direct connections to your TV. This will be especially true for a large HDTV.

I suggest using a switcher instead.

Just looked at your TV. It seems you have a generous set of inputs. I suggest you use direct connection. The TV will give a better conversion. The only exception may be an upscaling DVD player like the Bravo D1, but the advantages will be small. My plan is to wait for a HD/Blu-Ray DVD player that will also upscale standard DVD.

This product is not for switching, I'm not looking for that. I am looking for a product that does what this one claims to do and that is:

"The HDUP-1500 is a scan converter able to take a standard definition video signal and upconvert to High Definition Television (HDTV)".

I want to know does it do what is stated above well. I'm getting mixed reviews but I'd like to know if anyone in this forum has used one.

From the review, it appears this box will upsample the image but due to cheap digital filtering will make the image look worse. So if your goal is a better picture, this isn't the way to get it.

Your HDTV was designed to do the same thing. My bet would be Samsung has a much better upsampler for the analog inputs than this box.

The DVD player remains the one possible exception. Read test reports and user reviews for upsamling DVD players carefully. They can result in small improvement or make the picture worse.

I find a good quality standard DVD player hooked up in progressive mode works fine without upsampling.

To get a better quality upsampler, you will be paying far more. Broadcast quality units sell in the thousands. The good news is this high end technology will be built into next generation mass market HD-DVD players and these will outperform standalone boxes (many technical reasons skipped).

Projector sites sell upscalers and have many FAQ's.

If you have to have something now, consider the AVeL Linkplayer2
which uses early generations of these chips. It will become quickly obsolete when the production HD-DVD players hit.
