I want to know what advantage is made when converting wav or mp3 audio file to ac3 audio file especially for dvd authoring. I've tried some convert but I've got only 15-20Mb more space in audio file for one 3 Gb MPEG 2 file.
    Regards.

    Hello,

DVD specs DON'T allow MP3 at all for audio - you might be thinking about MP2 which IS a valid dvd audio spec.

WAV or LPCM is uncompressed audio and is fully supported by the dvd standard. But as you mentioned it takes up WAY more space.

AC3 is 100% compatible in NTSC land where-as MP2 isn't FULLY compatible - But I've never had a problem recording in MP2 audio with my hauppauge wintv pvr250 in the US. You should get a lot more space saving to convert LPCM to AC3 as it is greatly compressed compared to the LPCM.

If you are working with 2 channel audio, then there is n't much of a differemce, except for possible compatability issues with older NTSC players. It's when you start adding more channels that AC3 really shines. Personally, I believe if you have a good source, then AC3 will give you more clarity than Mpeg1-Layer2 (MP2), but for most sources (DV camera, download etc) you won't notice the difference.
