I have an original 1.8 GHZ G5 with the 4x SONY DVD RW DW-U10A drive.
I'm looking to upgrade it. I was looking at the Sony DW-D22A-B2. I use Popcorn primarily for burning.
Any thoughts/suggestions on this burner or another one you like better?

you can never go wrong with a pioneer....the 109/A09 is the newest
Friends don't let friends use Windows!

I wish I could afford a G5 instead of my lowly eMac. I would go with a Pioneer 108 or 109. Flash the drive to make it region free, get Mac the Ripper and VLC and ditch the Apple DVD player. There is a mac terminal version of the flash exe now. Just remember you have to specify the 'path' to each of the two flash files(kernel and main file) in Terminal just like you would in Windoze running from Command.

108 is wonderful. Its what I have
Heard abotu the 109 but have not personally tried it, but I cant see why it wouldnt work
make sure you get PatchBurnIII and run that right after your initial install.
That will let your iApps work and such. Toast should see it ether way.

Thanks for the informative responses. The kids like Apple DVD player and its interesting to see that it needs so many upgrades for the iApps.
Has anyone tried dual layer burning on the mac yet? -
Yep, my drive handles it quite well. Gotta have latest toast to enable the feature. Have not tried it with iDVD mostly because i dont really use it much. But they work great, now for the price to come down!

No need to flash the burner to make it region-free. VLC reads all regions and formats from a stock single-region drive. Likewise, MTR will rip a disk from any region regardless of the region setting of the drive. About the only app that actually pays attention to the region setting of the drive is the Apple DVD player.

Maybe it won't matter to you, but it may not be possible to upgrade the firmware for that I/OMagic drive without a Windows box. For a Mac I'd stuck with a Pioneer burner.

I think this drive would be nice in a G5. I have the external version and it's fast and reliable. Plextor have Mac firmware updaters, too.

Glad you suggested Plextor. Their prices are generally higher but their Mac support seems above average.

The Pioneer 109 isn't flashable yet without a PC. But the OSX flasher for it is being beta tested.

What about the NEC ND-3520A, $57 at NewEgg? Anyone used one of these in a G5? Specs:

Read Speed: 48X CD-ROM, 16X DVD-ROM

Yay!!! In my earlier post, I said that I had yet to burn to DL media and just now, I finished buring to a DVD+R DL disc using I/O Magic DL burner. This is so cool.
