a friend gave me a dvd copy of movie with permanent subtitles in it(on top of the black bars) unfortunally the subtitles are in a foreign language that i cant understand. is there any way to remove them?

by converting the movie to divx and croping the black bars i will get rid of the subtitles, then i will convert the cropped divx to dvd again and use dvd lab to add the subtitles in my own language.
is this a good idea? wont so many conversions ruin the movie?
is there any "vob cropping tool" available?

    thanks
    soory for the bad english.

No. Live with it. Permanent subs are just that - permanent. You could extract the m2v from the VOBs, mask the subs area in VirtualDubMod and frameserve to an mpeg encoder, and add your subs, but is it really worth it? Quality will suffer (how much none knows). Why not get the "real thing" if available?

thanks for the advice Mats.i would buy the real thing, but, most of the time s after being on the cinemas a film can take up to 1 year to be on sale in the shops.
is it possible to "paint the subtiles" or insert a "black rectangle" over them and burn the result with dvd lab and the right subtiles?
can i use editstudio for it?

    thanks
