  1. I buy a lot of indie videos. Some have purple backs (which I realize are 98% likely to be burned) and some have silver.

For those that are silver, is it highly likely they're manufactured instead of burned, or is it possible they might be burned?

I have DVD Identifier - when I run it against a coupleof silver-backed DVD's, it says they are disk type DVD-R but book type DVD-ROM. What does that mean? Does it mean they were burned or manufactured?

I would predict, knowing what I know about the number of copies the producers are likely to sell, that they're burned. And in the case of one of those producers, out of 3 DVD's she has sold two are purple-backed and one is silver. DVD Identifier not surprisingly, identifies her two purple ones as DVD-R for both disk type and book type, but her silver one is disk type DVD-R and book type DVD-ROM. What in the heck is book type and what does it mean if book type is DVD-ROM?

purple backed discs are burned discs. i have yet to see any manufactured purple backed discs.

as for silver, its the oppisite.. most likely they're manufactured..

    book typing can only be done with some dvd recorders and only with dvd+r & dvd+rw discs.. when a dvd recorder reads a disc it looks at the book type, it will read one of the following;

    dvd-rom
    dvd-r
    dvd+r
    dvd-rw
    dvd+rw
    dvd+r DL
    dvd-ram

commercial discs are dvd-roms, because they are true dvd-rom discs.. some dvd players wont play dvd+r's, but if you set the book type to dvd-rom there is a higher chance it will play on more dvd players..

a friend of mine had an old toshiba dvd player that would only play dvd-r & manufactured (dvd-rom) discs.. it would not play dvd+r's or dvd+rw's, but if you set the booktype of the dvd+r or dvd+rw to dvd-rom, it would play them without a hitch.

you cannot set dvd-r or dvd-rw to a booktype other than dvd-r for dvd-r and dvd-rw for dvd-rw (which is set by default)

  3. Lumis, thanks so much for the VERY informative reply! It was very helpful!

So if a disk is silver, and if DVD Identifier says it's disk type DVD-R and book type DVD-ROM, is it reasonable to assume the disk was manufactured and DVD Identifier has a bug that is making it say the disk type is DVD-R?

    Hi
Yeah i pretty much just answered those questions he asked in his other thread

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=262473

What he is reporting in DVD Identifier was not making any sense and he needs to post a screen shot of DVDInfoPro.
