I see these files in the HDTV newsgroup and most of them are just huge.
I have seen some over 10 gig...so you could'nt even fit something like this on a dual layer disc.

What is the purpose of these? Are they better quality than DVD?
Are they meant mainly to be viewed on a pc only?
If these are better quality can they be put on DVD without any quality loss?

There are plenty of tv shows posted but lots of movies as well...are these movies better quality then the ones I have on DVD since they are up to 5 gig bigger???

Can someone explain what these are all about?
    Thanks.

Download some hdtv samples and see for yourself,
    ftp://ftp.heise.de/pub/ct/spezial/emotion.mpg
    http://demod.dvico.com/hdtv/hdtv_demo.tp
    http://demod.dvico.com/hdtv/jewelry1.tp
    http://demod.dvico.com/hdtv/Jang_00.tp
    http://demod.dvico.com/hdtv/hdtv_demo2.tp

You need a mpeg2 codec and the hdtv pump filter and you should be able to play in media player or media player classic.

You can not put them on dvd without any quality losss....you must wait for the hddvd or blueray formats.

And you neeed a big and good tv or projector to be able to see any big difference...if you still have a 14" tv it isn't worth it...

And don't download hdtv, buy IT http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?forumid=6

HDTV is not a media format. It is digital tv, you must get a digital receiver, probably a parabol and hdtv channels.

The movies you may see on newgroups are recorded from hdtv...and then shared illegally...please don't discuss it here.

Well I have an HDTV I just have to get a digital box from Comcast.

Sorry about the newsgroup thing. I was just curious what it was. I would rather wait for the HD DVD players to come out.

    Thanks for the info everyone.
