  1. On some new AVI files my Philips 642 won't play. On two of them (Stargate Atlantis and The 4400) it read the index and starts skipping thru the files (per the display counter) but the TV is blank. On the Never Die Alone avi, it reads the index and give an error message - invalid codecs. All are the available files download.

All three play from discs on the PC with no problems.

I haven't read of others having these problems. So do I have a defective unit?

    Regards.

  2. I think the dvp642 is touch and go with XVID files. IF you're atlantis is like mine its an XVID. I haven't tried it in the player yet, but when i tried the season premier of sg1 (also an xvid) it squashed the image and made it look like 2.25:1 aspect ratio... now that i think about it maybe i could of tried putting it into 16x9 mode..

meh anyways i know the box doesn't list xvideo support, so i think its kionda sketchy for that codec.

  3. It's not your unit. The 4400 XVID encodes will not play on this machine.

  4. Hi all, I have a problem like this. Have a copy of Starship Troopers 2, that is xvid. Plays fine on comp, but I tried on dvp642 and I get codec error. I tried to reencode the file with virtualdub, but I get an unspecified error, when dub starts. Any ideas on this??

  5. Run the file through the newest version of gspot, and see if the xvid is qpel. If it is, uyou've got to re-encode it. Other than 2 files out of a few hundred, I've had no problems playing xvids on the DVP642.

just to add a little bit to this subject the Philips DVP642 will go as high as Xvid 0.9.1, all newer versions of the codec are not supported. so if you downloaded something more recently and checked it out with gspot or something else ('file' in my case since im running linux) and noticed its a higher version you will have to re-encode it like Thomas suggests.

Mine seems to play v1.0.3 OK (as long as Qpel and GMC aren't used).
