The Sony DVD+R discs that have "Made in Japan" as their point of origin are actually Taiyo Yuden discs. There are two different variations on the DVD+R spindle labels, one is bluish and the other has a little more purple in it. The purplish labels are the 'Made in Japan' labels.

Picture of Sony DVD+R label to look for:

(Note the 'Made in Japan' in the right middle of the image)

I've bought seven 50 pack spindles (total) from three different stores, and every one of the spindles with the purplish labels and 'Made in Japan' on the labels have turned out to be Taiyo Yudens.

Here is what DVDInfo has to say about the discs:

I've included a part of my receipt to help out:

A copy of my receipt from Best Buy

This might not be the best deal out there, but at least you will know to look for the MIJ (made in Japan) Sony DVD+R discs. I've heard that the MIJ Fuji DVD+Rs are also Taiyos.

  2. Same Question:
    Sony DVD+Rs = Taiyo Yuden

    What's media code? TY?

  3. The Media Code from the Sony DVD+R MIJ is "YUDEN000T02"

They are the same as the Fujis DVD+R MIJ.
Except the Sony dont have any visual imperfection on the outer portions of the Discs like some of the receint Fujis have had.
