How can a standalone DVD player play a DVD+R and not a DVD+RW? I noticed this in the DVD player section. And can these progressive scan DVD players play interlaced DVDs? They must be able to play progressive and interlaced, right?

Yes, progressive scan players can play both.
Different types of disks have different structures and surface properties that require different read methods. Some manufacturers chose to implement only some of these methods for their own reasons (price, time to market etc)Read my blog here.

Do you mean DVD+R and DVD+RW have different read methods? A DVD+R disc has a different structure than a DVD+RW disc? A rewritable media is built differently than a non-rewritable media is? I was looking at Samsung DVD players and all seem to support DVD+R and not DVD+RW. Thanks much.
