I used to have Norton, got tired of the paid upgrades. Switched to AVG free, along with Spyware Blaster and Spybot and no worries, no viruses, no trojans, no spyware.

At home, AVG Free has done everything I could ever ask/expect of it. At work, we use E-Trust InnoculateIT (subsidiary of Computer Associates AFAIK), and more recently, Trend Micro.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I use KasperSky as well, never had a problem with it. I've used Norton AV in the past, no problems.

Question: does anyone know which AV software -- AVG, KasperSky, Norton -- is most efficient? IE, requires least amunt of system resources.

I think they all use similar methods. I guessing they scan the files and compare them to a database. Speed is mostly a function of your computer and HD speed and how extensive you need to scan. I like programs like Spybot and SpywareBlaster because they seem to block a lot of nasty files before they get to your HD.

Speed also depends on how often the virus database is updated. More updates, more scans needed to keep on top of it all. AVG seems to update at least once a week. Kind of a pain if you have dialup, but nice for broadband. I also use a router, which limits a lot of malicious stuff.

I tried Kaspersky after hearing good things about it. It seemed to suck all my system resources horribly so I uninstalled it.

  10. My home computer has no AV s/w. That is not a problem because I don't connect that to the internet. I have a office laptop that has McAfee AV which is quite good in my opinion.

I perform all downloads on my office laptop and then trasfer them to my home PC. This way the virus protection is automatic.

    ??

I like the fact that AVG has essentially day 0 definition updates. Furthermore, their updates are differential which means each update only contains the new/changed data. More often than not, the update is less than 100 Kb. I use AVG and am on dial-up at home and it is enormously better than when I used McAfee which did not have differential updates.

  12. Seems to me that once a month AVG does a massive update. I've seen a 4MB download on a monthly basis since December.

    I like Avast Home Edition.

Have also put NOD32 on another machine and am very impressed with it.

In myo pinion these anti viruses have found more viruses on my system than mcafee, panda, kaspersky and powerguest.

I'm sure Norton is a very good virus scan but its well known for screwing up systems. I installed norton on 6 different computers and it made them run slow, and it has that annoying undelete recycle bin where things go into it im sure theres a way to get rid of it but its juss too much hassle i juss wanna straight forward virus scan that picks up a lot of viruses.

there is your problem you install Norton UTILITIES which comes with tons of crap that really sucks. I normally hate Norton but I have to admit that I like the 2005 version. I think their active protection is better then AVGs.

I use Norton AV. It's paid for by work and is always up to date.

Norton is the root of all evil. It sees everything as a potential threat. Even if you have it, chances are you'll get some really nasty spyware and if you're not ahead with renewing it you're truly stuffed.

Check with your Internet provider-I just switched and got a load of really cool pop-up blocking, anti-maliscious script bits and bobs. Works far better than anything else I've ever had.

Trend Micro at work and home. Trend Micro did increase their annual fee to $25, so next year I might consider switching at home. Trend Micro is definitely not bloated like Norton, I have never had a problem with it.
