I have seen some newer DivX that won't play with the 3.11 codec. Make sure you have the newest codec and also make sure that they're DivX and not XviD.

  5. I've been using windows media, divx player (latest) and xvid player. the errors i got were "file type not supported" and check it is a valid mpeg4 file. i tried gspot and got "not a valid avi file". should i give up?.

Sounds like they are not DIVX as you think they might be.

It's possible it's a quicktime file. If you have media player classic, install quicktime alternative and see it that helps. I downloaded some files that said they were MPEG-4 and they were QT files.
Real Alternative is good to have also. No need for a bunch of players if you can play everything in Classic.

I also had to install the new WMV9 codecs even though I had WMV9_VCM because of the new audio.
