  1. hi i just bought my 5101 at walmart for $199 canadian

havnt really tried it too much yet but i do notice that the colors are messed up (reds are crazy red) and its seems the contrast is messed (for ex. when i go to record from my vcr that normally has a blue screen with white writting when nothing is playing but when hooked up to the recorder it it a very bright nasty blue and the white is a gray/green color)
its almost like theres a dark grey film over anything it records and on top of that the colors are too intense.

i upgraded to the latest firmware
    im using standard rca cables

i hope this is just my machice and when i take it back and get a new one all those problems will be solved

does anyone else have any similar problems?

    thanks

  2. My LiteOn 5101 has color problems too. I haven't noticed the crazy red colors that you were talking about. But I have noticed the shadows are greenish (see my other posts) and skin is yellowish instead of pink. The Liteon is altering the pass through signal for both AV's and S-Video.

I've returned my LiteOn 5101 twice now and I'm currently on my 3rd unit since XMAS. All of them have this greenish tint. My first 2 units were manufactured in Aug 2004 and the last one was Nov 2004 (from serial# label on the box).

I have a feeling all 5101's colors are screwed up. The greenish tint is a bit more subtle and I didn't notice it at first until I switched the TV between the satellite feed and the recorder's output (AV's or S-Video). Dimly lit scenes are the worst. You'd best take it back and get another one. I got mine at WalMart and either they'll keep giving me a new unit every month (I have 1 year over the counter replacement), or they'll wise up and remove LiteOn from the shelves until they can get it fixed. I really can't undertand how these units shipped from the factory without LiteOn doing a simple color test on the video signal.

I've switched back to my Sony VCR and I'm amazed at the rich flesh tones that it produces. When I go back to viewing the signal through the LiteOn, people look green around the gills.<g>

If you ever get a 5101 working properly, let me know what the manufacture date is.
