  1. OK i orignally posted this at hydrogenaudio since that is closer to audioripping, but it didnt raise much concenr so i'm trying here instead ....
    ----------------------------------

    Hi all audio freaks

can i remotely mount a CDrom that is somewhere else in my LAN, and use it to rip on my computer?

    Allow me to explain again:
I have a computer A, which i waqnt to run the ripper software on, but i dont wanna use that computers CD. I also have a computer B, accessible in the LAN, which isnt any good for running the ripper program, but it has a decent CDrom. Can i mount that CD on computer B and make the ripperprogram on computer A believe its a local CDrom?
perhaps through some hack ? cool.gif
    peace

    yes
i often get demo discs with free and trial software on them, but the discs are DVD's
the PC at my desk is where i usually want to use/try these progs, but it doesn't have a DVD drive
the PC at my home theatre is where i do all my media stuff and it does have a DVD drive, so i just put the DVD in my "media-monster" and then navigate to it's DVD drive from my desk PC

simply go into Windows explorer on the PC that has the drive you want to use
right click the drive and choose "Sharing"
tick the box that says "Share this folder"

go back to your other PC
    go into Windows explorer
    click "Tools"
    "Map Network Drive"
and pick a letter for the other PC's drive

    that should do it

  4. Thanks for the ideas ... !
...although i have a vague feeling that it wont work. A ripper is probably expecting a CD unit, explicitly, and this shared CD will only look like your average device (like a hard drive)
After all, if i have six harddrives (or partitions) and one CDrom, all on one computer, and i start up a ripper program, that program will know instantly that i want to rip from the CD. It wont be asking me about the harddrives....
