what is a good dvd (standalone) recorder, for cheap?

i was looking and see many dvd recorders for cheap money. walmart has one for $140-150 range. i was wondering if any one has these units and how well do they work? i want to record tv and convert my hi-8 tapes to dvd, as well as other vhs tapes, thanks

Go for the panasonic es-10 or lite on 5005 which go for around $179.00,those other dvd recorders are not very reliable . Remember good things are not cheap and cheap things are not good.

Have you checked the DVD Recorders list here in the column to the left? That's where you'll find the most feedback.

i did look at the reports on this site but you get 10 reviews and 6 are great, 2 are mixed and one is slamming the product.
i know that the more you pay the better, but if you bought a sony dvd player the quality of the playing is good but it hardly plays anything but dvd_ROM's ..no vcd, dvd+r's etc. then then you buy a $30 apex and it all good. so price don't always indicate most useful.

I have the dvdr04 sold at walmart and I am very happy with it. It hasnt given me any problems. And I did keep the receipt

Pioneer-220S works like a charm for me. 200$ at wallmart.
