  1. Ive just converted an avi 2gig in size which grew to 7.6... i forgot to put auto fit on, and it took a bit over 2 hours. Whats best to upgrade first cpu ? or memory?

    atm i have a 2600 xp, 512mb @2700 , 9800 pro

i was thinkin of getting another 512mb stick, also would it matter if it was @3200?

Video encoding is always a resource hog!

CPU & Disk IO are the key components - more so than memory. So maybe a faster HDD (7200rpm if you have 5000rpm currently or SATA 10000rpm if you have the right h/ware) with more cache (most newer HDD have 8MB, whilst older ones have 2MB)

  3. go for a faster CPU!!!!

i got a nu laptop and can enc a dvd (CBR) in real time (P4 3 gig, 512mb), and my laptop HDD is at 4200 rpm......

cpu more important than HDD speed!!!

it takes me x2 realtime to enc a vcd (CBR), on my pc (duron 1.3, 512MB, 7200 rpm!!!)

True. Sometimes it is easier to upgrade HDD than CPU, however. (motherboard limits etc)

You can pick up a P4 3 gig, 512mb for less than £250 - so maybe a new PC!

  5. yep this is true, if DanielVilla is stuck with a 333FSb not worth ug for a max of 2.8/3.0 Ghz i don't think much speed increase will be seen, might knock off a 1/4 of time max!!

faster ram will only be slowed down by the slower ram in the system any who 512 is fine more is only needed for games ect...

ChrissyBoy is right, get a nu pc /mb upgrade, but what you got is good, 2hrs ain't long, i had to wait 6-8 (MPG) hrs on my duron600 back in the day!!!

i'd wait a bit & shop around P4's are good for now but i don't know how well the amd64 peform, they should be better seeing theyre 64 bit & alll.....

  6. Okay so it seems the new MB and CPU is the go here if i wanna really see some increases.
A new HDD too yes but the 10,000 you speak of are quite $$$ especialy per g.

Im thinking of the amd 64 3200 which isnt too pricey just to find out if i should get the (s939) version first.
This article altho old seems to showi amd compared to the P4 is better in the second benchmark concerning avi...

And for the MB maybe an asusNf3 and will be in business.
Will the old 512mb @ 2700 kingston limit this new system?
would it be unwise to say get 1 gig 1day or should i sell and get higher new 1.

  7. not an expert but use the fastest your MB supports,

as for the AMD64, make sure you get get as much on chip cache as possiable, its worth dropping a couple hundred herts if you get more cache

again im not an expert but i think for example ,

    a P4 3200, 512 KB will perform slower than a P4 3000, 1024KB, when it comes to video encoding!!!

cache is the final place where the data is stored & is the quickest to be accesed, makes sense to bac this up with fast ram, so the cache is always full & cpu don't have to wait for the data to be called from ram...
