  1. I just got a Lite-On 5007 series dvd burner (from Sears)
and the only issue I'm having with it
is that during the first 10 to 15 minutes of burning
time (or playback time) on the DVD.

During this time, the DVD spins so loud in the unit that
it is almost annoying to use.

It seems like as it reads/burns from the 'center' of the DVD
outwards, it gets quieter as it goes on.

For example, I recored Survivor the other night on HQ setting.
at timecode 0:00 the sucker spins super loud.
If I hit the chapter advance button to 5:00, you can hear the drive slowing
down a little, but it is still loud.
It I hit the chapter advance again to 10:00, you notice a definate
decrease in the spin and the sound.
... and at 15:00 the disc is just about silent at this point.

Now, if I work my way BACK chapters, ultimately ending up at 0:00,
you can hear the drive spin up FASTER and FASTER as I get closer
    to the 0:00 mark....

Is this normal on DVD recorders?
I've even returned a Lite-on 5007 and exchanged it for this one.
and the replacement does the same thing....

Any thoughts? I have about 45 days left to return it, which I probably will - unless this is normal in recorders.

  3. If you don't want noise only when watching a movie, you can use Nero CDSpeed to slow down the drive to 2 speed.

  5. Yes, its a DVD Recorder...

So, this is common on a lot of units?

I actually just saw on Lite-Ons website that
some of their units can put out to 50+db of sound..
    eek!

Anyone have any recorders that do +R discs that
paid under $200 for . . . that are quiet running?

  6. Oh.. by the way, have other Lite-On customers
(maybe just the low end recorders)
    experienced anything like this?

And.... the other recorders that may be noisy....
are they noisy running all the way through discs,
or just for the first few minutes - like my issue...?

    thanks guys.

They might have forgotten to put grease in the spindle bearings. If that's the case those will start to sound like the gates of hell opening when they start to sieze up :P

When we got our Panny E50 standalone, the first several days we were getting grease spots on the burn side of the media when we ejected them. Apparently they over-greased the mechanical parts at the factory. But it stopped, and you know what? I'm glad it did the spot spraying ...because it means it got a good lube job And it's dead silent when it's running. No noise whatsoever

The JVC is quiet. It's really the only one I've had that made no noise (without sacrificing fans, etc).

Purchased my unit the end of January. It has the same noise issue using Maxell +RWs. I recently purchased some TDK +R discs and the unit spins very quietly with them. Go figure!

I have a Liteon lvw-5005, and mine is loud as well. Its very loud at first like you said, then gets quieter over time. I havnt tested it to see whether or not its the media I use, or if it only happens in the begining of the dvd or not, I'll listen next time. My Ilo dvdr04 is quiet though, all the time.
