    Using Yahoo messenger, are the webcam images I see on the screen a good example of very bad video or they are just still pictures being projected in succession?

    If you have a cheap webcam then its just bad video output,try tweaking the webcam settings to get a better picture.Also yahoo outputs the video at reduced framerates so it will be very slow.
