RJ-800DVX vs. RJ-1500DVXII vs DVP-642

which has better dvd video playback quality?

RJ-1500DVXII has the ESS Vibrato II chip
RJ-800 has the Mediatek chip


does the phillips 642 also have the ess vibrato 2 chipset? if so, can i assume that the rj-1500 and the 642 have the same video quality? i owned the phillps 642 and the dvd video quality was sub par with a pitting effect on textures that should have been smooth/flat. i want to find a player with the 642's file versatility but with good dvd playback quality.

Maybe someone with the Phillips 642 can verify what the GUI looks like.

NOTE: keep in mind that each company that has these players OEMed to order can customize their own firmware and menu layouts but the overall look is about the same as the original OEM setup version. The following pictures are meant to give a general idea and will not look exactly like the players in question of this thread.

I believe the Phillips is ESS but I don't own the player myself.

I also think that the MediaTek in the RJ-800 supports additional DivX features that are important to some.

I had the Phillips642 = Garbage.

I had to RJ1500II next which was fine after the
firmware upgrade, but, I couldn't use it with my
Yahama receiver because my Yahama remote would
interfere with the player .. volume up/down would
put the player into slow/zoom mode.. retarded.

So I scored the RJ800, and luckily enough it
solved my remote control issue, but! .. the *******
thing drops/skipps frames on certain XviD's. It's
like choppy and stuff .. I know it's not the movie
cause I dropped the same CD into an RJ1500II and all
played fine without a hitch .. so .. then .. I contacted
RJTECH people, and I mean this is one guy sitting in some
basement appartment, for some help on this .. and he
informed me of a firmware upgrade that wasn't on the website yet.

OH JOY!! .. yeah right ... I got the update and nothing .. same
shit .. still choppy and no word from RJTECH.

So I'm pissed off kinda ... Anything you guys can suggest would be
great .. I would love to get back to the RJ1500II but in that case
I'd need a different receiver.. so .. not gonna happen.

If you're reading this cry for help and are looking into a player
I suggest you score the RJ1500II ... for now I guess.
Untill the RJTECH monkeys get around to another firmware upgrade.

And yes .. RJ800 will do QPEL and GMC or whatever else .. I tested.

Nice to know, but, I'm not buying the phillips642, no way. It's shit.

I'm currently in talks with RJTECH about this matter, we'll see.
If I find a solution, I'll post it here.

Nobody's talking about the RJTech RJ-250PDVX. I've had mine a couple of weeks now and it works fine so far. Plays every kind of Divx/Xvid except those with ogg sound. It has the ESS menu shown above and plays all the usual stuff besides Divx. Region free right out of the box. Plus its small and portable in the sense of fitting in a briefcase, works with a car adapter etc.
A few online retailers have it for about $90 incl shipping. I think legal issues may be the reason we don't see it in any USA retail stores.

I need more user reviews before i can pick out if i should get th rj800 or RJ1500II or the a 642. Too many mixed reviews on the 642 about the skipping and what not. BUt then i hear its on all 3.

this updated did not solve my issue.

go for RJ1500II, unless they relase a decent upgrade for the RJ800

how are the feels of these dvd players? some said they were cheap looking and feeling. i understand the cheap dvd tray about aside from that i dunno. how old is the 1500-II compared to the Rj800

It's been a while and no word from RJTECH yet about any fix
to my RJ800 ... oh well ...

I'd like to switch brands all together ...

If anyone can suggest a quality Divx/XviD player that would be great.

Just purchased an RJ-800DVX. It is a nice player for the money.
Picture quality is great. But the IR sensor on the player is something left to be desired. The angle is very narrow and distance short.

Picture quality for DIVX playback is much better than that of Lite-on 2001. DVD playback is about the same. I have not had any skip problems like what others have experienced.

I like the time and view buttons on remote.

Overall, it is a good player.
