  3. Hence have you or anyone else tried playing on XBox:

    - mpeg1 or mpeg2 file (vcd/svcd compliant or not) burned onto a regular data cd-r (not vcd/svcd format)?

    - minidvd (not 'cdvd') burned onto cd-r?

    - wmv or asf file burned onto a regular data cd-r? I was hoping this would have a chance since its a M$ format.

    Please no XBox/GameCube/PSX2 flame-o-rama!

  4. i tried compliant vcd/svcd, and non compliant streams as well (xvcd, sxvcd..) they won't work. only original DVD's, the xbox will say it can't recognize the disc if you put in any other type of disc.

  6. I still haven't got answer about:

wmv or asf file on data cd-r
mpeg file on data cd-r (NOT vcd/svcd/xvcd/xsvcd format!)

I have heard on other forums that audio cd on cd-r works so I don't think the cd-r media is the problem. Anyone?

PS - I've heard of several PS2 Divx player projects in the works. This will kill XBox if/when it happens.

X-Box has the advantage of the Windows Code Base for programing.

PS2 Linux still isn't implimented apparently.

  8. while we are on the subject of game consoles here's my 2 cents. i have talked with ALOT of people who are die hard Sony fans. all agree that the PS2 is a doomed device. it has something to do with software companies not makeing games for the PS2 because it is extreamly difficult to produce the type of software that the PS2 requires. x-box might do a little better in the long run but all agree that the gamecube is gonna be the top device. or at least until someone puts out a new system that will topple all 3......

  10. alot of people think that it is. i don't know. i'm still in my PS1 mode. PS2 is just TOOO much to spend on a game console, x-box i still have questions about, and gamecube is another language to me. i havn't messed with nintendo since SNES. plus i have plenty of PS1 games to keep me occupied until prices start to drop.......

  11. I would be surprised if it takes a year for the XBOX to be hacked. Windows technology has always been know to be easily modified and hacked to your needs. Microsoft has already started getting nervous when people saw its specs and said that they were going to try to run Linux on it,In response, MS said that the X has highly sophisticated technology that they feel can stop hacking of the box.
I think MS should really stop teasing the hacking/programming community by saying that their stuff cant be bended, it kind of brings back memories of the history books when they talked about the captain of the titanic, "What could the ship possibly need lifeboats for,its unsinkable!"

So in closing, give it a year or so and ten to one they will have VCD DIVX and any other thing that you could think of running of the XBOX,I mean for god sakes, it a PC!!!
    P3 CPU,MEM, Hard disk,broadband modem,and the hackers friend,WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    just a thought though.

  12. Agreed, 300 bucks isn't cheap, although I did break down and buy one over the summer. If any of you have an AMEX Blue card and live near a Virgin Megastore, I think the 30% off deal is still going - PS2 (or even Xbox if they're in stock) for $210.

Personally, I think the DC is an awesome deal now - anybody who hasn't played/owned one, you can't go wrong. The jump from PS1 to DC was much more significant than DC to PS2, although many of the games coming out now for PS2 seem leaps and bounds ahead of the first generation stuff.

I'm very interested in the Xbox though - the potential 'hackability' (is that a word?!?) is really appealing... I agree, I think it will be relatively easily hacked, and we will see some really cool things going on in that area. And I'm not sure how much MS even cares, I think making the machine hackable is key to their holding their own against Sony. After all, one of the main reasons, if not THE main reason, the PS1 has enjoyed so much success and longevity is the ability to play backups - not the same kind of hack I meant for the Xbox, although that will certainly be a big component - but I think Xbox hacking will go much further than that.
