I have made alot of DVD's by converting some VHS tapes to DVD and ripping other music video clips and making some best of compilations, then making menus and writing onto DVD media. All up i have put alot of time and effort into making them.
But i was thinking to myself the other day that this is quite alot of trouble to go to...if the finished product is only going to last a certain period of time. I mean you have a dye based blank disc that the information is burnt on, and even if you try your best to keep it clean and free from dust and scratches...really.. how long do you think its gonna last before it starts to freeze up or produce small errors here and there. This is why i always make about 2 or 3 copies of everything and i always try and use the best possible quality blank Disc's.
If the equipment to stamp professional/commercial DVD's instead of burning was more affordable, i'd imagine the longevity problem would not be an issue....and people would use it instead of cheaper dvd burners.
I have read information that some burnt media has a lifetime guarantee...but couldn't really imagine a disc lasting that many years.
Maybe backing up burnt DVD/CD disc's every few years might be an another option.
What do you guys think about the life of a writable DVD disc?

    9 years, 7 months, 15 days, 12 hours, 45 minutes & 28 seconds ... but don't quote me on that ...

Seriously, I don't think anyone really knows, because we haven't had the experience of DVDs for long enough to really test them, and sure enough, in a few years DVD won't be the "standard" any more and we'll be asking how long Bluray will last.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. last only 24 hours
