Hey there. I've been having some weird problems with XVid over the last few days and I can't seem to remedy the problem. When I try and play an xvid movie all I can see is a blank screen with hints of blue and red every once in a while. There are only two ways I have figured out to fix this:

    1. Rebooting the computer seems to fix it

    2. If I play an xvid movie in one player and I open another player and play the xvid movie (or any movie) it works. For example, I load up an xvid movie in winamp and I can't see anything save for the blue and red lines every once in a while. I then open another player like VLC or Media Player Classic and it works perfectly. It's as if the only way I the xvid codec will work is if another application is using it.

I am tried to uninstall and install the drivers (K-lite, ffdshow, xvid) and nothing seems to work.

Another thing that may be of interest if after a reboot everything works. If I play a game (any game), quit the game, and then try to play an xvid movie I get the weird corruption. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Opening two movies would (assuming that the first is using hardware overlay) force software overlay. So that suggests that it is a problem with your video card/drivers/settings. That would be the video renderer filter though, shouldn't matter what decoder is used. Definatly should be only effecting Xvid.

Beware of the k-lite codec pack ... there are things included that should not be installed ... each has information as to why one would install a specific feature ... choose wisely .

Get rid of ffdshow ... can cause problems ... only install if required for conversion process , then remove it .

Update your video graphics drivers .

Reboot pc when done ... and try again .... sounds as though directshow filter corruption has occured .

Hey guys just wanted to give an update. I may have solved the problem. Three days ago I upgraded to the new nVidia drivers which I now think are the culprit. I went back to older drivers from June and those seem to work well right now. I'll play around more and keep you updated.

I agree about codec packs, but what is wrong with ffdshow?
