    Hi all,

    I've read here recently, on a post (haven't the link handy), that the so-called new drive from PIONEER has been released......I checked their site and saw nothing;

    Is it really coming ?
    Will DVD-R DL will ever be reality ?

    Is it possible to have soon HD-DVD or Blue-ray recorders available for consumers ?

    Thanks,

    Zetti

    I have a Pioneer 109 in my computer right now.
    The media, on the other hand .... that's a good question.

    HDDVD and BDROM is too far away to be of concern.
    Nobody has players anyway. All vaporware right now, mostly.

    I've had the A09 up and running for a week. So far it seems rock solid.

    Unfortunately the -R DL support will come later in th fhe form of a firmware upgrade. (It seems the specs haven't been entirely worked out yet.) Consequently there are no -R DL discs on the market. I hear -R DL disc playback should be compatible with most existing players, but I haven't seen anything official. If the -R DL disc prices are anything like the +R DL disc prices, I won't be purchasing any. So why did I buy the A09? Faster burning. My A05 still works great, but only has a top speed of 4x.

    Rock solid using what?

    When I had the Pioneer 105 (it died yesterday), I used
    - Prassi PrimoDVD for duplication.
    - Nero 5.5.10.54 for DVD-Video template.
    - RecordNow Max (4.5) also sometimes for duplication (DVD+R media dupes).
    - And then, of course DVD Decrypter sometimes.

    Remember, I do real work, not "back up" the local rental store.

    My problem is this: NONE OF THOSE WORK ANYMORE WITH NEW HARDWARE.

    Therefore, I'm starting over, by all counts.

    - Nero 6.6.0.6 will see the drive, but it's DVD-Video template has messed up the menu on one disc, when played on one player. The older Nero did not do this. I have not seen any secondary instances of it screwing up the author, so I'm hoping this was a random fluke. I hate to waste discs/time, but I will burn this again the see if the error can be reproduced. (EDIT: I could not reproduce the fluke. Nero 6.6.0.6 is fine I guess.)
    - Prassi ONES does UDF-only burning for DVD-Video, but it's more stable. The UDF discs are not seen by the PC, so unable to duplicate. The player sees it fine. On the upside, this may become my new duplication softare, and at a really good price too!
    - RecordNow 7 has no demo, not willing to buy it for $80. The images at Sonic are not too convincing.
    - DVD Decrypter is fine, but I rarely use that.
    - Because ROM folder are also necessary on projects, authoring to an ISO is unacceptable. I need to set my folders when I burn the authored project.
    - ISO/UDF mode in Nero 6 does not work on two players, regardless of UDF mode or any other setting here.
    - TDA may be an option, yet to test that.
    - DVDWS2's built-in engine may be an option, but it's NOT one that I find acceptable because it adds extra folders to the final disc.

    What are you doing, software-wise?

    Software at least works here (unlike my BenQ experiences!), but just not as good as I would have wanted, not what I'm used to over the past 1-2 years.

    I also bought some MCC03RG20 16x discs that it only sees as 4x. Yes, I have the 1.09 firmware update.

    EDIT: After more testing, it looks like Nero 6.6.0.6 is fine for burning authored folder sets using the DVD-Video templates.

    No backups here either. I don't believe in them, but that's another story...

    Most of my projects are home videos converted to DVD-R, ripped to HDD, and re-authored. Occasionally I do similar kinds of conversions for clients, co-workers, and friends. (If I was trying to make a living at it, I'd starve.)

    Generally speaking, I rip with DVD Decrypter; IFO mode/no file splitting. (Then I get one large VOB to work with.) Re-authoring: Ulead WS2, TDA, and sometimes I use Womble MVW for fun. To burn: Nero 6.0.011 hasn't given me a single problem. Before burnning, I always run msconfig & re-boot my computer to prevent unnecsessary programs from loading. Some people thinks that's being paranoid, but I almost always get perfect results that way. So, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    In the past week, I've used eight Tayio-Yuden 8x (recognized as 12x in the A09), and I've also used four Prodisc S03 4x. (The T-Y's were burned at 8x and the Prodiscs @ 2x.) No coasters so far. I've checked the discs with DVDinfoPro, but I wish I could get results like Kprobe. Any ideas? When my disc supply runs out in a few weeks, I'll buy/try some faster discs.

    I realize 12 discs isn't much, but so far the A09 hasn't hiccupped once.

    Thanks for replying;

    Well, considering A09 came alive without -DL support, I guess it'll lose market share a lot to already existing +DL, and when it ever comes alive, +DL will be as established as possible....

    Someone posted here another link recently saying that +DL (or -DL) will never be "largely" used, cause it'll be more or less in the "middle" of single layer and HD-DVD or BlueRay - if these ever come alive....

    The same link says that the price of the media would never fall below US$ 4.....

    I think I'll forget -DL and buy a +DL now, and will try to locate some media;

    Baldrick, I'm confused, is this Forum to reveal news or maybe also to talk about new technologies ?
    Please of course feel free to move the topic

    I don't know why you cannot see Prassi ONES recorded DVD's on your PC. I burn DVD-VIDEO/ROM combo discs in ONES in Data Mastering mode (ISO 9660 + UDF) and all the files are recognized on 2 different computers and 2 laptops that I have here. All run XP Home/Pro and one also runs 98SE and no problems either. Also plays great on every DVD player. This is my choice for single layer burning nowadays for distribution. Have been using it since July 2004 and not a single complaint from clients.

    RecordNow 7.2 with August 2004 engine works fine with my Pioneer DVR-A09XL. The only thing is you can either select 1x or Max speed. But if you select Max is does burn on maximum, so no problems there. Now it seems there will be RecordNow 7.3, so perhaps the speed selection will be fixed for A09. RecordNow 7.2 automatically makes every DVD ISO+Joliet, so it should be very compatible. Joliet part never caused any problems for DVD players. RN 7.2 also successfully burns Verbatim DVD+R DL on DVR-A09XL at 6x.

    So Prassi ONES and RecordNow are the ones that will probably work best for VIDEO_TS/ROM burning.

    I would not make any assumptions about +DL being better than -DL. Judged alone, +DL is not very good. Maybe -DL will be better, maybe not. Wait for it.

    While not nearly as taxing as DVDs, I burned 50 VCDs on my A09 for a client today. Not a single coaster. I used Nero 6.0.0.11 again.

    LS: My offer is still good.

    Epis, still thinking about it. I'm tempted.

    Anyway, I'm not able to get this into UDMA Mode 4, it's stuck in MultiWord Mode 2. What's yours set to? (EDIT: Nevermind. Was looking at the ancient CD burner, it's in UDMA 2, the 109 is indeed set to UDMA 4).

    Duplication at 4x is also slower, about 3.8x (instead of 4.3x on my 105), and the read buffer underflows now. I think it's Nero-related and Prassi ONES does nothing but crash (fatal error, program's BSOD).

    Still cannot find a decent duplication program (Nero has also sucked in term of DVD duplication, always seems to cause underruns for no reason).

    I've just placed an order for some 8x Prodisc (giveaways). I'll try them out on the A09 in a few days and report back.

    RE: underruns, that's why I run msconfig - then reboot... Give that a try.
