If you have XP pro at home you can turn on basic FTP though windows by installing it from the IIS section of the add/remove programs area.

Just be sure to turn off guest access. However I don't think you can have it just share a directory. I think what your sharing has to be inside a specific dir for it to work. There are other FTP programs that may work however.

Enable file/drive sharing in Windows and you can connect directly to your home drive with \\your.ip.address\sharename$ (though if you can, anyone can, and a simple Windows password won't help much). You'll have to open your firewall to allow your school's IP through though. This way is pretty stupid though - years ago a friend of mine enabled drive sharing, no password and no firewall... left the door wide-open for anyone to connect and download any files from his drives (which someone did, so he finally installed a firewall)

The best way is with an FTP server. Gene6 is a great choice for Windows imo.

But unless you're using Secure FTP, your username and password will be sent in clear text over the network. Any script kiddie with a packet sniffer can see them.

    VNC

    http://www.realvnc.com/

PCAnywhere type of product... more than just accessing a server share.

VNC is good, but you can also use Remote Desktop built into XP Pro. There are clients for older Windows and even Mac clients for connecting to your RDP-enabled XP Pro system.

The fastest VNC is at http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net

Download the program PLUS the VideoHook driver (VERY IMPORTANT)
That means 2 file downloads. Install UltraVnc, then install the hook.

The Video Hook reduces CPU utilization and speeds up remote connectivity.
I mean REALLY speeds up remote connectivity.

Can you describe the process in detail if possible? I am a uni student too and have been trying to remote connect for a long time, but have not been successful so far.

    Thanks

Loaded PCAnywhere last nite... seems to run good and I can connect to my work machine after logging into work VPN. However I also use (Remote Desktop) Terminal Services to work on a few servers and it is by far the fastest compared to PCAnyV11 and gotomypc.

Did you have access to both the computers at the same time?
