    Hello,

Ok these days they have those text crawls on just about every news broadcast - local and cable.

Is it too much info??? Is it distracting??? Does it help you catch up on something you missed????

    To me - NO!

It takes up too much screen space. And how can you watch cnn or foxnews??? They've got only 1/2 or less of the screen left for ACTUAL VIDEO these days it seems.....

    So thoughts?????

I like them. Sometimes the news people will go on and on about 1 story and you don't know anything else thats going on in the world. The crawl gives you the information right away.

I've talked about this subject before, but I think an interesting option that should be on all TV's made these days is a News Crawl Eliminator. Press a button on the remote and stretch the picture enough to push it off the bottom of the screen (kind of like zoom on DVD's). Seems like an obvious feature that would be very easy to implement in today's TV's.

In fact, I'm sure that sometime, somewhere, a TV mfgr. will pick up on this idea and include it, then all the others will follow.

There was a very funny saturday night live sketch where they parodied CNN. They kept putting on more and more of these news crawl things, and pictures and graphs and the reporter kept having to readjust so she could be seen. Eventually all the graphics just totally covered the screen.

Personally, they don't bother me except when they run the stock results. It just goes by so fast I don't know how anyone can make heads or tails of it.

    They can be distracting too.

I noted someone here in Australia complaining of seeing the news text crawls when trying to view the release of 'Revenge of the Sith' video clip on TV.

I do find TV show advertising tags as worse and as so annoying when trying watch something like the football for example.

They are a nuisance and a distraction not needed as I don't care on the Station's TV shows.

To be honest, I fuckin hate them. When I'm watching hockey, or football, or basketball, or soccer, the last thing I wanna see is the scores flashed accross the bottom. It's so distracfing, and they just mindlessly repeat the same crap. Do I really need to see the score of the LAL-LAC game 30 times in 10 minutes?

    It's so pointless.

They're okay during the news. But please, don't put them up during a regular program. If it's something important, they can drop a commercial and run a Newsbrief. People watch TV to escape reality for a while. TV execs simply shouldn't fool around with that concept.

If I ran a TV station, my slogan would be: "News at 5, 6, & 11. Not when someone farts."

I find them handy for when I'm in a hurry (most mornings) and I want to find out who won the cricket/tennis/football/golf the night before.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hello,

I liked the earlier suggestion of implenting a "REMOVAL" button for text crawls. With the promised bandwidth of HDTV maybe it might happen?????

For something as simple as this, HDTV doesn't matter. Making a picture zoom in by some predefined amount should be a simple matter. In fact, since the news crawls vary in height, you could have a stretch "low", "medium", and "high" preset amount to just stretch it vertically just enough to rid yourself of the crawl.

I don't know why it hasn't already been done, but thanks for validating my idea. Now if I could only get a TV mfgr to pay me for the idea (remember the guy that came up with intermittent windshield wipers had to fight in court to get paid for his idea?)

If I was still working at Sony, I'd definitely be contacting Tokyo about it. See, they lost a genius when they lost me :P
