  1. Hi,
    I have a Lite on 5005 (brand new) .
I've noticed that sometimes there is a delay of 10-15 seconds
between when I hit the record button and when
the unit starts recording. Could this be a potential problem
    with my unit?
I did not have this problem with my previous recorder (Akai DVDRW 120
which i believe is a Liteon 5001 clone).

No, not a problem at all. DVD recorders, VCRs, capture cards, they all do it to some degree. The nature of the technology.

Does your car automatically hit 70mpg/kph? Probably not. Takes a few seconds to hit that, some longer than others.

  4. 10 to 15 seconds is a long time. The car analogy is strange because it is not designed to hit 70 automatically. Come to think of it, I could hit 70 mph faster than his deck would start recording!

10 to 15 seconds is a bit long, have you updated the firmware on it yet. I know my liteon after a firmware update and a RESTORE TO DEFAULT has help a lot speed wise!

VCR from the time you press REC for OTR recording there is a 2 sec delay
PC-DVR from the time you press REC there is a 3 sec delay
Home DVR from the time you press REC there is a 3-4 sec delay

As for your stepping on the gas to hit 70 mph, depends on your HP? 400 HP depending on the car average is 0-60 mph 5.0 secs. LOL

How about pressing record 15 seconds early?
Do you know how to use the timer?
    starts the exact time, everytime.
Or record a second or two, then put on pause, then hit record when
    ready.
Asking a DVD recorder from idle, to capture, get disc up to speed, and verify, in a split second, is in my opinion a bit ignorant.

It sure does. It starts about 1-2 minutes early, preps itself as needed, and then starts recording at the first second of the minute.

My Philips 985 is VERY VERY FAST to start recording...much faster than even 10 seconds....and I don't recall ever using the timer.
I think that lapse at record/start SUCKS...I'd be pissed.

  11. Try putting it in "Rec-Pause" mode before you you want to tape. Then hit the Play (or Pause) to start recording (I'm not sure which one un-pauses it right off hand, since I've stopped using my 5005 for recording, and switch completely to my JVC).

I have noticed using the Rec-Pause technique, has cut down on my "actual recording" lag tme (if not completely removed it).

Well, since you're on the West Coast, come check out my ignorant recorders! There's a big difference between a split second and fifteen seconds. It's apparent to me now that some do and some don't have a delay, mine has a delay of one second at most. I can understand the original poster's concern in that his first Lite-on did not have the long delay. If I DID have a recorder with that kind of delay and it was considered 'normal', it wouldn't bother me in the least, I would just allow for it.

  13. Hi All,
    Thanks for you replies.
I mostly use timer recording so its not a problem
(recorder starts 1 minute before and is ready on record on time)
I plan to get around the record button delay by pressing record first
waiting for recording to start and then playing the source (or by pressing record earlier when recording from TV).
Otherwise the unit seems pretty fine.
BTW, the delay may be less than 10-15 seconds ( i have not actually timed it).

  14. If you are using a new disk, it takes a bit of time to "prepare" the disk, once that's done recording should start almost immediately. I always put a couple of new disks in and let the Liteon prepare them beforehand. When I go to record (usually via Guide menu, recording starts immeidately once I press "GO!" - I have not seen any delay at all.

I have not tried it with the timer, but with TV show start/end times being so unreliable these days, I routinely record a couple of minutes before and after anyway.

Now Stopping is a different thing altogether - there will be a 15-30 second delay as it closes out the session.
