  3. I installed it and could not connect to the internet anymore. So I uninstalled it. The only thing I can think is that XP Home Edition is not compatible with the service pack I downloaded. I've been too busy lately to try again.

or at the least, your net software was old and not compatible with sp2.

I reccomend against SP2. I have seen lots of issues with driver and perforamance.

Wait until hardware manufactures catch up with SP2 and for Microsoft to release at least 10 or 20 patches for SP2 before installing.

I am running SP2, trouble free, although I did a fresh install with a slipstreamed cd. If anything, SP2 has been more stable for me. I did, however shut off all the security center junk, and am running 3rd party apps.

In our testing lab when we put SP2 on a machine we see at least a 10% drop in performance and many more issues arise.

We have about 50 different graphics cards from low to high end and dozens of different procs and motherboards.

We have never seen an improvement in any software when testing on SP2. Only seen it hurt the software.

  12. I'm a sys admin for a large coporation and our entire IT department of over 100 people have it installed and no troubles at all. Plus I have it installed on 5 computers at home. But yes if you do have a illigal copy or a using a blacklisted CD-KEY, then it will break things on you system.

I love the built in pop up blocker and active-x blocker. Plus if you have not downloaded it yet, go get the new anti spyware beta (even though it is a beta, it is really the same product that GIANT software created who was one of the best spyware software makers. MS bought them out and put a new gui on it. ) You can download it here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62...displaylang=en , it detected a lot of things that spy-bot and adaware didn't remove on my systems.

Use bazooka for things Ad aware and spybot don't find. Bazooka is a manual though not automatic. It tells you were to delete things and you can clean things up much better. Humans are better at catching mutant versions of viruses and spyware. You don't have to wait for an update to get ridden of mutant strains created by copycat hackers.

At work we don't use blacklisted cd keys we use MSDN copies.

When I talk about the performance drops I am talking about framerates dropping in 3D graphics programs like games. I have never tested SP2 with encoding or transcoding video. They won't let me do that at work.

Slipstreamed to new CD Sp2 here too. No Problems. I went to it the day the RTM SP2 was released for download.

However I have seen many Microsoft Service Pack and UpgradeWindows failures when trying to install on a machine that already has problems/Spyware/Malware/Adware/P2P/Viruses.

Your Machine sounds like a candidate for a clean install of Xp anyway. Bite the bullet. Create a printout of all the S/W you use. Make CDs/DVDs of any S/W you've downloaded. Printouts of any product keys you'd need to re-install into a new windows, Examples TMPGenc line of products/Nero, Etc.
Download the latest versions/patches beforehand of Software, Codecs, and Drivers.

Be prepared to spend 1/2 day total..

Takes me about 2 hours to get back up and running and then I just reload other less commonly used S/W as needed. It always seems to be less than the time before.

Your computer will run at it's best after a clean install. When Done take the time to make a backup for easy restore next time.

    Good Luck

No problems across 4 machines at home, or about 50 machines at work. This includes a mixture of "upgrades" to SP2 and fresh installs using a slipstreamed CD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  16. Other then having to update a few programs that bugged out with SP2 everything seems to be running fine (OMG a 1st!). SP2, in my case fixed a few things but broke others, luckly just minor software issues that were resolved by updating to the newest versions.

It can be uninstalled but can make a big mess if you installed a lot of other apps after installing sp2.
