The place to look is firmware flash.

Edit: Holy Jesus on a Pogo Stick! They're gone! Uhh... well, ask around...

  3. Best thing I would say is to use ANYDVD with DVDshrink. DVDSHIRNK will back up your movie region free and ANYDVD will make your DVD drive in your PC region free.

If you still would like to have a nice region-free firmware for DRU-500A then this place has it:

    http://tdb.rpc1.org/

It's based on the latest 2.1A firmware with all the benefits of the official release, including the ability to read DVD+R DL discs. It's got Auto Reset and RPC1. I flashed my DRX-500ULX (external version of DRU-500AX) and it works great. Had it with this firmware already for a few months and had no problems. Don't need AnyDVD anymore. Also these latest 500A/500AX firmwares are universal, for both 500A and 500AX models, unlike the earlier firmwares.

On a side note, I have quite a few DVD burners, including the new Pioneer A09XL, but this Sony DRX-500ULX produces the most consistent burns on single layer media out of any burner I've tried. Great KProbe scans and great looking dye quality without any rings, etc.. And that is on almost any disc manufacturer. So take care of your 500A and don't sell it. That one was the only true Sony burner. The next models starting from 510A were made by other manufacturers, such as Lite-On and others.
