Hi
I have some three year old DVDs which only my Pioneer DVR-106D reads
all other Burners and readers give at around 50 % with I/O error
I want to back up around 500 DVDs which are all old
So I want to upgrade to a faster reader
Here at this thread I came across a interesting story
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256543
exactly similar to mine and there Lordsmurf recommends BTC burners and LG
My question is which Model from BTC has the best laser or which Model from LG has the best laser
Are LG writers also good readers?
Thanks

I agree. I just sold my 106d. I noticed that it was a better reader than my dvd-rom. If it didn't play in my dvd-rom, I would place it in the 106d. This is going to be hit and miss for you. I would suggest a plextor burner, but that may not do the trick either. Good luck

I'd recommend the BenQ1620.
I've never had a problem ripping even very scratched up pressed DVDs.
It's not necessary to take LS' view as gospel; there are other good readers which have been OWNED and USED by people.

A few months ago I had a badly scratched disc that only the Plextor 708A was able to read. I tried my Toshiba dvdroms, Pioneer 107, Benq 1620 & Liteon 411 drives which all failed to read the disc. If you're willing to spend the money then get a Plextor burner from which I've read is a great reader. The BTC drive is not the best burner but if you're looking for just a reader then get a LITEON CDRW/DVDROM or a AOPEN 1648A DVDROM.

I have never had any drive that would not read ANY dvd-rom, dvd-r or dvd+r!!!!! 100% of the time it's something else!!!!!! if you can't, you either have a bad disc or drive....
And you have not been around for what ?? how long ?? and you consistantly want to challeng LS.... like you are some god like you think benq is
But this is all my opinion from my own personal experiance.... -
C't magazine gave the Pioneer and Lite-on 100% for reading badly scratched DVDs and the BenQ was next in line. I have a BenQ 1620 and it's read every DVD I've thrown at it.

I'm going to walk around the turd pile (for the moment anyway) and comment on my Toshiba 5112 burner. While it's only an average burner, it's been able to recover about a dozen discs that none of my ~10 other DVD drives were able to extract completely, so it's an awesome drive for those crappy discs that need to be backed up, from scratched discs to discs that were poorly burned. Among other drives, I've also got two NEC burners, a Benq burner, a Liteon DVD-ROM, a Philips DVD-ROM, a Samsung DVD-ROM....none of them has stood out as being much better or worse than one another in ability to rip bad discs, although the Liteon and NEC drives can rip fairly fast.

I have a Liteon ROM that does a fairly good job.
I find that it rips fairly fast but has trouble with some marked up discs. For the marked up discs that the Liteon chokes on, my Pioneer usually handles them, but is a little slower to rip.
@budz-chill out...i wasn't directing any comments towards you. It's just really funny to see a member who's been here for 2 months, continually bash Lordsmurf. You and Steve know your stuff...and that's cool.
Cheers! -
Hi everybody
Thanks for feedback
My system already has Toshiba Sd-M1712 but it gives up these old DVDs ( they are not scratched but they were burned on low quality Ritek media and may be a weak laser) after reading 50%
Then I have Pioneer DVR-106D which reads almost all except one in 30 DVDs
Then I recently bought NEC-3520A but it will not read at all these old DVDs gives up after 50 % I/ O error Then I bought just a Aopen 1648 AAP pro DVD rom it is also very picky and woulld not read any of those DVDs so I returnrd both of these drives and started serious research on the net about reading Old unreadable bad media DVDs and I came across the thread where Lordsmurf suggests either BTC burners or LG . Then I talked with some of my friends in Germany and they all said the LG 8X burner was a great reader but now it is no more available
So today I ordered LG 4163B from Amazon.de lets see if it reads ?
Otherwise I will have to try using BTCVariable Bit Rate in DVD Recorders : A quantum Leap

I use Plexus to clean all Netflix and BB discs before playing them, works excellent on fingerprints and smudges, doesn't fix scratches though.
-
it's not about scrathes...it's bad media.
I am not a plextor fan, I still use a 3 yrs nec1100, but I have a plextor cd-burner.
recently, i had to copy a cd, of course, a bad media cd, and the plextor was the only one to work, without any errors. I tried on nec1100, 2500, toshiba dvd-rom.
so, I would try one, if those dvd's are so important, you have nothing to loose. If the plextor dvd's are as good as cd-burners, then it should work. -
My post was not intended to take a "shot" at Lordsmurf. It merely was supposed to point out that the views of one individual person do not represent the be-all end-all when it comes to a particular thing, in this case DVD burners.
I have nothing against LS or anyone here. I just think it's important that everyone get a balanced picture of things, and that cannot possibly happen if only one viewpoint is presented.
