I read a tutorial here: http://www.jonesgroup.net/media/id139.htm
My main question is about the custom template you can make to avoid reencoding compliant files. Judging by the name of the menu "DISK template manager," I am making the assumption that this setting will apply to the whole disk. In other words, this custom setting so it doesn't reencode is great for a movie recodered at 5000kbps. But what happens when I have 3 or 4 short clips and one is at 3500 and the others are at 5000? Is it possible to select more than one disk template per project? And what would it do with a VBR project? I downlaoded a trial but couldn't get it to install on my computer. I will take the time to figure it out if it will do what I want. Anyone have any background on this?

In DVD WS 2.x, you tell the program how to treat any non-compliant titles in your project -- whether or not to convert to your project template.
So, assume you have 5 compliant video titles that are DVD Compliant (mpeg type, resolution, bitrate, etc...).
For each of the titles, you tell DWS whether or not to convert to the single project template. The program will use them "asis", or it will convert them tot he template if you tell it to.
If your source file is non-compliant, you will not have the option to use it "asis" because it will need to be encoded -- using your project template as the encoding settings.
You can do the same with the audio (use compliant, or always convert to disc template)George
