A buddy of mine is getting fiber optic next week installed from Verizon, paying $35 for a guaranteed 5mbs and 2mbs up. For an extra $10 he could have 15mbs down guaranteed. Lucky jerk

Yeah, your buddy is lucky
Does your buddy live in Tx also. I wonder Why verizon doesn't deal with the Louisiana area -
I can't understand anything past 2Mb for a personal line unless you're a huge pirate or can surf a ton of pages simultaneously. Not many sites allow you to download at speeds approaching the 5Mb range yet. I don't even think gaming requires that much bandwidth, and I'd have to think that upload would be just as important as download speeds for gaming. I run a game server and don't think I could do so if it weren't for my 2Mb up speed. I only get 2-3Mb down and that's just fine for me. In fact I'm just glad I get broadband out here at all.
How much is it costing to install fibre lines? There are some cities here doing just that across much larger areas and giving free broadband citywide. And it isn't just a slow line, we're talking 2Mb/1Mb speeds to the internet and far faster speeds between the city's "LAN". Now we're talkingFB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -
Install for him is free. He happens to live in a test market city, however, Verizon plans on moving into D/FW sometime soon. He knows he won't need anything greater than 5/2 so he chose that package. The most he does is websurfing and his wife pulls files off a server for her job on a daily basis. He was paying $30/month for 500k down and 70K up with Verizon DSL, the extra $5 is definitely worth it.

I've got Houston RoadRunner. Before the new year it was 3Mbps down, now it's 5Mbps down. Believe it or not, I can really tell the difference. Everything was pretty much instant with the 3Mbps, but now it's incredibly instant.
Some servers allow dowload speeds that fast. The main one that I run allows download speeds much faster than that, in fact. It can't hurt to be ahead of the curve anyway. -
I pay $45 for 6Mbps (rated, actual speeds closer to low 5Mbps range). Most sites won't open up the pipes to let you download that fast (from one site). That's why I use a download manager (GetRight) which allows me to download in segments for a higher combined speed. It's great for linux distros and M$ trials among other things. I also enjoy looking at trailers on Apple's website and letting them play instantly versus waiting for it to buffer (yes I'm impatient). When I signed up for it I was paying $30 for 768K-1.5Mbps, so it was worth it to me.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
Bah humbug. I pay $5/month for dialup. Hi speed internet is a rip.
