I have been trying to find an audio editor, preferably a freeware one since I've already paid for my sound hardware, that will do a decent job of editing a lengthy WAV file. Problem is that of the free/shareware ones I have tried, all have come up short. Wavepad, for example, cannot do fade-ins without inserting silence between the faded-in segment and the rest of the WAV, making the segment I faded in to disguise an edit stick out like a sore thumb. In no particular order, I have tried Wavepad, AllEditor, AVStudio, WaveNet, and several others I cannot think of right now. I think the people who came up with the idea of crippleware have a lot to answer for.

Goldwave is a popular recommendation. Only US$40 I believe...

Then there's Sonic Soundforge - a bit pricier, but I've seen that regularly recommended too.

    Good luck...

I knew there was another one... I just couldn't think of it. Thanks housepig - that's been bugging me for a while now. And I haven't had time to search...

Of the commercial offerings, Sony's Sound Forge 7.0 and its little brother, Sound Forge Audio Studio, will give you the best bang for your buck, IMHO. Sound Forge 7.0 is, as someone else said, a bit pricey ($399) and is geared more towards professional audio production, but Sound Forge Audio Studio is only $69 and is great for everyday audio editing (your request would be right up its alley, for instance). The Sony Media Software website can give you all the detail you can possibly stand.

(Note that I am not affiliated with Sony in any way, shape, or form, other than as a satisfied customer. I use Sound Forge 7.0 myself, and previously used the "little brother" versions when they were still under the auspices of Sonic Foundry. I had the opportunity to do a "special offer" upgrade to 7.0 at a ridiculously low price, and though I don't really need 90% of what it can do, I would have been stupid to pass up such a fantastic deal.)

    Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I am going with Audacity for the time being. Being that I merely want to do some fades and short edits on certain tracks, I think this is the best way for me to go.
