  1. Hi all

I can play DVDs and I can copy DVDs, but I cannot write them from a collection of smaller clips or for that matter from DIVXX files.

I thought I had cracked it when I realised that FAT32 did not support big files and changed to NTFS but still no success.

The problem occurrs when creating the DVD on my hard disk before writing, after about half to three quarters through the computer locks up. It does this with roxio, win dvd creator and others.

I have to switch the computer off.

    HELP!!

They want details like your OS and how much is lots of free space?

I had a 300MB harddrive that I couldn't dream of filling up. That was lots of harddisk space.

what DVD writer do you have?

What DVD are you backing up?

    MoBo? any details help.

They a most likely going to suggest using better software.

For backing up DVD's the Dynamic Duo is DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. And they are both free.

Some newer DVD's choke DVD Shrink. So you have to run them through VOB BLANKER first. Which is also free.

Roxio is a music company. Not a video company. I wouldn't expect much from there video sdoftware do you knw who actually make there software it's probably some other software with roxio labels on it.

    EDIT:
Oh I misread your post but still most of mine applies. Complete your computer profile to help others help you.

oh man your email is probably more confusing to the dear soul trying to obtan help, i understand it because i know what i am doing...

and Roxio burner is actually good, its only downfall IMHO is that it is not quite as intuitive as other burning software

Also, a bit more detail about the process you use to create the dvd files from the avi clips. Include ALL programs used in the process.

what he means is that 300Mb used to be considered excessive space, whereas nowadays the operating system can use more then this!

as above Roxio is not the best, but is quite capable, but there are easy and better software apps out there.

In order to create a DVD, your files first have to be DVD compliant.
DIVX is a CODEC which, i think, is usually AVI files.

These would need to be converted to DVD complaint files first (MPEG-2).

Conversion guides can be found HERE, and conversion tools can be found HERE.

You will then need to author your DVD.

Authoring guides can be found HERE, and authoring tools can be found HERE.

Some authoring tools can burn onto DVD for you (sometimes be utilising a burning tool already installed on your system)

Most people here want to help others.
However they do not like spoon feeding people.
Unless you give details and information, many will just skip the question.

Help us to help you. Complete you profile, including computer details.
We dont need to know your bra or sock size, but details helpful.

As Doppletwo said DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter very good, but as stated above you will need to convert your files first.

NEXT TIME, please search this site before posting......the left hand link bar is FULL of very useful guides, tools and other help. If you are new to an aspect of DVD /VCD / etc / etc (and even if you are not) tehn your questions are very likely to have already been asked and answered by someone on this forum, search for old posts.

Glossary of terms can be found HERE.

FWIW---MoBo I read as motherboard, assuming that you "handcrafted" your computer.

Lockups are NASTY to diagnose. Mine were heat related and fixed by removing a cover while aiming a table fan into the computers NETHER regions.

Thanks Zworg2 and otpw2 for translating for me. I will try and tone it down in the future.

I actually paid three dollars for Roxio but I haven't installed it. When I bought a DVD writer from Newegg for $3 dollars more they included "software". I am a gambling man and figured three dollars for any software is worth trying. but I haven't got around to trying out Roxio.

I was probably going to try and learn to use a real encode like TMPGenc and some menu authoring software. I have enough autopilot encoders already, but I'll try out Roxio's with your reccomendation.

I like most of Nero Vision Express 2 does that only thing that is not good is the menus they suck with Nero.

How are the menus created with Roxio?
    snappy phrase

    I don't know what you're talking about.

    Cant write DVDs
That is what prompted me to ask if you had a dvd burner.

All you need is a dvd-rom drive to copy dvd's. They go on your hard drive.
