I have this xvid file that was suppose to have subtitles.

It came with 3 files, all compressed. The final one would not decompress with STuffit so I dropped to a command line.

Now I have a movie file, a idx, and a sub file. I tried to load them into VLC but its still a no go.

Anyone know how to play these files?

I also have a sub2srt program but it doesn't appear to do anything to help.

If you have the three files in the same directory, a recent version of VLC should be able to make the subs show from the menu. Video > Subtitle track > Make selection.
For auto-detection, I think the filename (without suffix) of the AVI also has to match the first part of the filenames of the subtitle files:
    /my_movie/foo.avi
    /my_movie/foo-en-fr-ge.idx
    /my_movie/foo-en-fr-ge.sub
If not, the Open command also allows the user to select any subtitle file.

See this thread I had the same issue with subtitles for DivX/Xvid avi's. You will get some answers here for Mplayer and VLC.

Although I really wanted to watch my avi's with subs on an external DVD player (DivX compatible) and I still have no solution for that. I am going to ask Major (ffmpegX) as it may be possible to re-rip my movies to include the subtitles as part of the movie.
