Hi
I trying to find a easy and nice way to burn in a subtitle in a xvid file without re-encode the file
What I have find is that ether I have to re-encode to a new xvid file or if I create for example a MKV file with Xvid and subtitle inside
so I have to active the subtitle when I watch the clip.
Well the last one is not any problem, I have found a nice program call AVIAddXSubs and it look nice but if I can burn in a subtitle it better for me![]()

To change the picture a compressed video has to be decompressed. So you cannot burn subtitles into the picture without first decompressing the video. Then, if you want a small file, you have to compress the video again. You could leave the video uncompressed to avoid additional compression artifacts but the file will be enormous.

I don't know if it's obsolete or not now, but there were (are ?) the Divx subtitles, which added them as a separate
stream, along with the audio and video. You can use DivxmuxGui or Sub2divx to add them (srt or idx/sub).
Some standalone players can decode them, and they're switchable. -
...or AVIAddXSubs, which the OP is already using.
I think if the player is DivX-certified (I originally thought it had to be Ultra-certified, but that doesn't seem to be the case), it should be able to play XSubs. Or probably at the least, .srt format subs muxed into an AVI (which is what I was doing for my old Philips 642 for a while). If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
I had an old OPPO that supported xsub and idx/sub. But there could only be one subtitle. I used VobSubStrip to isolate the English sub. AviAddXSubs is also good for creating external idx/sub from .srt. Makes a big difference when I view on my WD player. The WD gen. one .srt support is only for quick and dirty too lazy to process video clips.
Main weekness of AviAddXSubs is it doesn't support unicode.
Some of the other xsub embedding tools may.Last edited by MilesAhead; 2nd Sep 2011 at 23:34.
