This is not a DVD recorder.

The only thing it does is enhance the video signal and possibly remove Macrovision on commercial DVD's.... results vary. For lack of better way to put it it's like a tuner, you can adjust color, turn the video to B&W and few other things.

I am brand new to DVRs.
I jsut bought a Panasonic DMR-E85H
I've been hearing conflicting reports about the Sima GoDVD CT-2
Will this unit let me back up my comercial vhs tapes onto dvd. (get past the copyright protection)
I'm not trying to bootleg anything I just want to back up some of my older vhs tapes that can't be replaced for my own personal use

Thanks
Thats what I wanted to know.
I already have the Pansonic DMR-E85 but it would not let me copy a comercial VHS tape to the hard drive.
It sounds as if the sima is what I am looing for to connect between the vhs and my DVRLuck Comes and Goes...Knowledge Stays Forever!

Hi there,
I just got one of these Sima CT-2 to back up some tapes to DVD. I'm going from my VCR to a WinFast Deluxe 2000 in AVI mode.
Before I had the Sima connected, the video capture was horrible. Macro-vision color shift throughout the capture.
When I added the CT-2 into the mix, the macro-vision was removed. The only problem, was it then interjected some video artifacts. Here's a look:
See the pattern in the lake area. This was not visible on the original tape, nor was it visible on the capture without the CT-2. It only appears on the capture with the CT-2. This pattern is throughout the entire capture.
Now I was able to clean this up when I processed the AVI through TMPEG.
Almost the same screen
I recpatured with various cables with the same results. The only option that I haven't tried is through the S-Video port as I don't have a vcr with an S-video out port.
Now this may be occuring due to the winfast capture card. Other cards/dvd recorders may not have this problem. Of course, I may have done something horridly wrong that somebody here may point out.
I dislike the physical layout of this unit. Instead of putting the connections on the back, they put the inputs on the left and the outputs on the right of the unit. So no matter how you connect it, there are cables laying everywhere. Also, the unit has no on/off switch, you have to unplug it to turn it off.
I'm still impressed with the CT unit as it did remove the macro-vision, I'm still going to play with it more to see if I can figure out what might have caused that pattern to appear. I am glad that I didn't pay full retail (About 129 in Circuit City) for this unit. I got mine through E-bay for about 60. For the amount of tapes that I want to transfer, this was a lot less expensive than a dedicated TBC unit. (I only have five or six tapes that I want to do that don't exist on DVD)
