  1. I have an NEC 2510A. I didn't have any problems in the first few months of owning it, but now, whenever I burn something with Nero, it completely eats of all of my 1GB of RAM, and it takes much longer than it used to when still burning at 8x, sometimes as much as 15min. I don't recall this happening before and I don't think its the hardware's fault.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips?

  2. Have you tried de-fragging your HDD?

  3. The first thing that sprang to mind was to carry out a defragmentation of your hard drive.

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: just pipped at the post

If you have been backing up DVD's for monthes I am 99% that you need to Defrag your HDD.

If the previous suggestions do not work, try using Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml) to monitor what is using up your resources.

Another thing, make sure the drive is operating in UDMA not PIO mode (device manager -> IDE controller (either 0 or 1, whichever has the DVD drive)-> properties -> DMA Transfer Mode.

If you have Intel Application Accellerator installed, uninstall it. If you are using Nvidia or VIA based motherboards, make sure you are using the default MS IDE drivers.

You could also try uninstalling/reinstalling Nero. Be sure to run the Nero Clean tool (download from nero.com support page).

Probably not PIO mode burning in PIO mode takes at least 30 minutes.
