All of the crazy weather that has been occurring lately got me to thinking. What kinds of things do you do or don't do to help lower energy costs and help the environment?
Myself: I got my folks to replace their most common lights with compact fluorescent bulbs. I also try to buy appliances that have the Energy Star label now. I drive a fuel efficient vehicle. Last summer I planted 9 big trees over at my parents house. I turn off lights that don't need to be on.
That's about it for me. 8)

problem. i dont recycle and i fart too much
Erm, HELP!!!!! -
The problem with the global warming thing is you do not know who to believe since "the facts" always seem to be whatever side of the fence someone is sitting on.
Nothing wrong with conserving energy though. -
Better out than in...although I definitely think some of mine have helped make the hole in the ozone larger.

Trust me, the little things we all do count as well.

I also would like to add that a substation in our city installed a hydrogen fuel cell that would power 180 houses nearby. I think this was the first fuel cell to be implemented in the US and could lead to more renewable, cleaner energy for the future.

I don't do too much to save energy, but I would like to comment about the weather.
2 weeks ago we had a major snowfall, I posted pics. The following week it warmed up, everything flooded, then last wednesday it got very cold, everything froze, electric went out all over the place and some are still without, then it warmed up again all the ice melted, and it rained for 5 days straight. The we had 2-3 average days, it rained the past 2 days, it's 60 degrees here today, flood watches and warnings abound, and it's suppose to get 4 degrees tonight or tomorrow
It's nuts.
I'm not sure about the global warming, it seems just like coalman says. But I do think nature always seeks an equilibrium and trys to maintain it. But if we get much more rain, I'm going to have to drive a boat to work. -

I sit in front of the TV and watch sports all weekend rather than mowing the lawn, driving to the hardware store or using any of my powerfull electric tools.
Big Government is Big Business.. just without a product and at twice the price... after all if the opposite of pro is con then wouldn’t the opposite of progress be congress? -
I'm part of the solution. I'm very energy efficient and I'm not having kids.

Alec:
Simular story. Years ago I worked with a guy from Nigeria (I think). He had told us that he had some kind of medical condition that could be passed on to his children (I don't remember what but I think it was a brain deformity or something along those lines). Anyhow at a young age either his family or government saw to it that he would not be reproducing. (snip snip) He moves to the US and finds a wife that says she too is unable to reproduce. At work we teased him a little (Hell he should have never told us but it was all in good fun and he hit back at us just as much) He was a good worker and we all liked him and we where all as freindly as construction workers could get (No, not like the Village People) So as you can guess she got knocked up. He beat her into a vegitative state and wound up in prison.
OK so it isn't a pretty story. But damb I miss that dude, and I can't even remember his name
Meanwhile back to the topic. I am a problem. We are all problems for the Earth. All of us consume or destroy more than we will ever be able to put back. It goes along with entropy. Not to say that we can't slow it down, but we can't stop it. I have planted thousands of trees (By the way did you know that if you removed all of the moisture from a tree that almost all of the remaining biomass did not come from the ground, but was manufactured in the leaves from CO2 out of the air?) I have junked many cars and other metals. And no matter how hard we try we will become extinct some day. (Boy ain't I a load of good news today)IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
To Alec and Zapper, thanks for your input. I haven't seen you two before so it's nice to get some posts from other non-regulars in OT.

I am no goody two shoe or anything, but I do see man as the biggest long term risk to life on earth. I know that an asteroid or something else could get us first, but us being our own undoing will be embarassing. Do you think we will make it 10,000 more years or 5000 more? Not likely, unless we can get off of this tiny planet and prosper in space. <fade in Star Trek music><slow zoom out Milkyway shot><pan to futuristic space colony>< zoom in on idiot about to destroy colony with futuristic bomb> It's never a happy ending

I'm confident that however badly we manage to trash this spinning rock in our time here upon it that some way, some how, we'll continue to adapt and evolve just like we did all along, even before we had all the modern science and technological marvels at our disposal that we now have.

We're all going to be big scurrying toxic cockroaches some day. That's where it's all headed. And porn is really going to suck whan that happens.

I conserve energy as much as possible but I think global warming is a bunch of nonsense. My question to those that believe in global warming is:
How do you explain the ice ages every 10,000-15,000 years?
BTW..@ZAPPER twenty lashes for screwing up this thread. -
