Hi guys. I'm thinking of buying a BenQ 1620 burner, which are $77 here in Toronto, and I'm wondering: Have any fellow Ontarians tested the BenQ media w/ the BenQ 1620?

    Thanks in advance,

    MJ

Benq does not make media, they buy it and stick their label on it. Having a Benq burner doesn't make the media any more compatible and if you buy it you are taking your chances.

Hello again Zippy. I believe it was posted elsewhere that the FS BenQ media has SONY D081 media code or something like that.

    Is that good?

Apparantly Daxon, who makes the discs, is owned by BenQ.

A search for the daxon media code turned up this page. Doesn't seem too bad if that's what it is.

BenQ 1620 drive has got a Philips chipset, that is great with DVD+R disks but not with DVD-R disks, so best choose is DVD+R disks.
With firmware B7S9 (or higher) this drive works really well also with DVD-R.

    Just my 2 cents !

BenQ discs are usually junk Media ID's.

And then the drive itself is pretty crappy compared to Pioneer or LiteOn drives.

    You're asking for double trouble.

Here in BC the difference between a Benq drive and a Pioneer is $20. I bought the Pioneer.

They're made by Daxon with Daxon MID as you can see in the media list here. The 8x discs are actually supported at up to 16x speed on the DW1620.
