I don't have a max but I am looking to buy a new hd so any critisism, good or bad, I will take. I have two Western Digitals right now but need more space (how many times have we all said that one?!?) so I have been shopping around. Just figured I'd ask.

I would choose Western Digital. For the past 3-4 years that's all I have used. No issues with any of them so far.

I have owned many hard drives, many sizes, from many companies.

Seagate and Western Digital never really dies. I usually retired those drives because they were too small, but they were still in 100% working order.

Maxtor always dies, every single one I have ever used, usually after just 2-3 years of use. Crashed drives suck.

I asked the same question in another tread earlier in the week. I ended up buying the Maxtor 300GB from Office Depot and I have it now. It's a DiamondMax 10 made in Singapore, which I believe is their top PATA model. Their instructions *strongly* recommend using their MaxBlast software for formatting instead of FDISK or Windows Disk Management. What a joke - MaxBlast crashed before the startup screen even popped up, so I formatted it with Windows Disk Management anyway and it worked fine. So far the drive is working OK, very quiet while idle and occassional soft clicking when being heavily accessed. This is my first Maxtor drive so I can't comment on longevity. I do have a Quantum drive that has lasted 4 years so far, and supposedly those were made by Maxtor. I also have 3 Western Digital's and 2 Seagates which are all still working (all 1-3 years old).

Of course, if you do a search on the net every brand of drive has crashed on someone somewhere - so no brand is completely safe. I would recommend using a cooling fan and a surge protector to help them last longer.

Western Digital is supposed to have a 320GB drive out sometime this month. Seagate already has 300 and 400GB models out.

  12. I use both WD and Maxtor drives. I have used tons of them. The failure rate is about equal. The only time this is different is when there are bad batches which I have seen from both companies. I did pickup the 300gig Maxtor from office depot for $129 since the also had a $20 off coupon for purchases $75 or more.

How did you get that $20 off coupon to work? All Office Depot coupons this week say they are void on "data storage devices". I tried that same coupon on the website and it wouldn't give a discount.

  14. The manager at my local store kindly authorized it. I really got the drive for $29 since I paid using my preffered gift cards that I had. But thats another story.

I don't usually buy drives from Office Depot since the are usually more $$$. As for drive failures, I have sent back 4 WD drives and 2 maxtor drives in the last 6 months. I put a lot of systems together. The one that ticked me off the most was WD. Brand new 250gig 7200 RPM drive failed after 2 months. The replacement drive they sent was almost 2 years old. I called and told them that it was rediculous to replace a 2 month old drive with a 2 year old drive. So they sent a new one 1 months old and let me keep the other.

  15. Maxtor is no different then any other brand. It's like comparing dodge, ford and chevy. It's all made in Asia.

Maxtor 300GB Ultra ATA/133 Internal Hard Drive, 7200 RPM 16MB Cache at only $149.99 shipped free. (Office Depot)

The next five pages contained the following:

Okay, let's get the obligatory hard drive responses out of the way:

"Don't buy this - I had a Maxtor once and it died! Get a Brand A instead!"
"Don't buy Brand A - I had Brand A once and it died! Get a Brand B instead!"
    "Brand B sux!!! I had..."
    Lather, rinse repeat...
You are a moron, Brand C is far better for a few bucks more! hehe Glad you got that out of the way.
And just so everyone knows Brand C is just a rebagged Brand A
Actually, Brand C is best. I am suprized you don't know that... If you look on crapsummerreports.com, they love it.

  18. Getting replacement drives is not difficult with either company. Usually 4-5 Business days. Just check the dates on the drives. They should never replace a new drive with an older one. Especially a year older or more.

Now IBM AKA Hitachi, they were at one time superior, but they went down hill once purchased by Hitachi. Now from recollection, I believe that the seagate and maxtor are one in the same, which is also conner drivers (if you remember them).

Now both maxtor and WD offer higher end drives, but the public pushing for lower prices have forced the flooding of 2nd grade drives. For the most part they work well, but the traditional 3yr warranties are gone on these drives for good reason. They do however keep the 3 year warrantys on on the higher grade version drives (Better components? Probably).

  19. If you really want a deal on Western Digital find a Micro Center and get the 120 Gig for $39 after rebate. This is the 8MB buffer model. They also have the SATA for $49 but apparently only in the stores.

  20. Thats really not a deal. The 160 gig WD has been $49.99 at Fry's on and off the last few weeks with no rebates. Problem is the drive is to small. I am running 4 250gig drvies in my case now, and need more room. 120gig is not going to cut it.

These drives are holding raw DV footage which I am editing.

I won't argue that 120 Gig. is too small as that is very much subject to personal use and the purpose for the drive. However, Fry's is only in limited locations and doesn't seem to do any internet business so it is only a good deal if you live in the right location and happen to be there when the sale is "on". For the rest of use that have a use for 120 Gig. this is available on line as well as locally and we don't have to play hide and seek with on and off pricing. If I was near a Fry's I might go there but there are a couple different versions of the 160 and I would NOT want the one with the 2 meg buffer. It is no where close to the 8 meg in performance.

If you look at the cost per gigabyte it is not that different so if you really do not need a larger drive this could be a better buy. I happen to need a backup drive with a ready to go mirror image of my current drive. That way if the primary drive fails I can swap this drive in with minimal down time while I wait for the old drive to be replaced under warranty. No down time and no time spent reloading Windows and all my software is worth $40.

Thanks for the link, I had not been able to find it before. Looks like your deal on the 160 is gone but they do have the same deal on the 120.
