AFAIK DVDRemake Pro is the only software at all that can do this in one sitting. I say one sitting because I'm sure with a multitude of programs you could possibly rig something up that would work ... or you could use the one program and a menu option.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Why would someone want to do this since quality would take a huge hit?

... but you re-encoded. Here we're talking about straight off the DVD, all menus, extras, the lot intact.
    If in doubt, Google it.

So you're saying that people are getting more video and more features on less space, and I couldn't get less features on more space? I really do suck at this...

... but then they'd need to transcode the shitter out of it, just to get it onto a DVD5 or DVD9 ...

I think your method would result in a better picture quality
    If in doubt, Google it.

I think that there is another way to do it, but takes much more effort and doesn't give quite the same result.

You could extract all of the original DVD's including menus and then re-author in DVD-lab or something and keep the same basic menus. Not quite the same, but essentially would give a similar result, albeit taking longer.

    True, but most are.

    I qualified my statement.

I put both disks of Gangs of New York on one DVD-R and it looked very good. In fact, everyone who's seen it is surprised that it came out so well....

    is this the same thread?

I just posted a method HERE that may work. I don't know if you need to join 2 DVD's then join the 3rd onto those. I think you can do it all in one go doin something below

import each DVD as 3 separate projects, strip whatever and save them (saves you stripping again if anything goes wrong )

load the 3 projects again and join 1 onto 2 and it will be called project 4 as you should have 3 open. Make a note of which PGC in the Video Manager menu is now shown as the title menu. This contains the links to the 1st and 2nd DVD's first plays in the button commands

now join project 4 (which is 1&2 DVD's joined) with project 3. You should now have a project 5 which is the 3 projects you had initially all in one project

finally before processing you would need to replace the newest title menu with one you created that has 3 buttons and update the buttons to point to the correct PGC's. I normally use GUI for DVDAuthor as it's ideal for quick menu's

the 3 button commands are the 2 button commands from the 1st title menu when you first joined. The 3rd button command is button 2 from the 2nd title menu after the 2nd join. You can also blank out the 1st title menu that appeared as it's now obsolete

I haven't explained it well but hopefully people can understand it
